Students should bring a certain skepticismto whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead ofaccepting it passively.

As the famous Mathematician Descartes oncesaid “I think therefore I am”, he means if you want to learn something, youshould first to question it. So I agree with the speaker’s viewpoint thatstudent should bring skepticism when they learn something and they shouldquestion instead of passively accepting the knowledge.

Firstly, skepticism is a good way to betterstudy. As a student of many years’ studying experiences, I have the feelingthat by remembering and reciting the knowledge itself cannot bring me the joyof learning. The process is boring and dull, moreover, the knowledge I gotpassively is easy to forget. On the contrary, if I learn with skepticism, Iwould question the knowledge and find support through searching relevant dataor materials. In this process, not only did I get a deep insight of thisknowledge, I got fun through this process which gives me interests to get downto deeper learning. Then the knowledge I get is far more than the questionitself.

What’s more, being skepticism whilelearning is vital for the students’ personal development as well as thedevelopment of the society. Someone rightly said “If you teach a student alesson, he well learn it for the day, but if you teach a student to learn bycuriosity, he will continue the process as long as he lives”. After all, theycan’t always be the passive learners, they’ll be graduate and step into thesociety one day. It will be their duty to play a certain role in our society,like the scholars, researchers, engineers. No definite answers, no accurateprincipals provided for them,
it is alldepend on themselves to explore with a skeptical mind, thus they can bettersurvival in the society.

The perpetual truths never exist, theadvancement of society brings about by people’s skeptical quality. Newton, ifhe had just passively accept the fact the apples can drop from the trees, hewould never had the chance to make one of the greatest discovery ofgravitational force, which amounted to an enormous step in the history ofdevelopment of force theory. Copernicus, if he wasn’t criticized about theearth-centered theory, the sun-centered theory will not be asserted in his day.

However, skepticism or question shouldbased on a foundation, which can be made first through the student’s trust oftheir teachers and the knowledge they learned. After they have laid a solidfoundation of the knowledge, they should also be able to distinguish whetherthe problem is worth questioning or not, otherwise, it is just a waste of timeand energy to intentionally criticize everything.

Being skeptical while learning can shiftthe students from a passive accepter to an active learner, which is aindispensable quality of study. However, find the right direction to thequestion is also crucial.
