The statement claim that people's ideas and values about a society hinges on the way people look, dress, and act, while appealing in some respects, is an over-statement at best for the reason that people's ideas and values about a society is a state of Being which is not outside but deep within he or she.
To begin with, turning to the way people look and dress, which is the appearance of people. According to the principle of Marxist philosophy, look and dress are wholly external appearance that cannot simply demonstrate the people's internalization such as ideas and values about a society. Moreover, even the skin-deep of a person could partly reflect his or her innate character. Unfortunately, within the significant development and globalization of our world, the trend of our look and dress is changing almost every season even everyday. Thus, it's cannot correctly accord with the person's intrinsic quality but his or her conformity. In short, we cannot conclusion the person's belief by observing his or her appearance, let alone the society's ideas and values.
Secondly, focus on the way people act, such as the way people talking, laughing and treat to others. Admittedly, the culture of a society has a dramatic influence of people's philosophy and sense of worth. And then reflect partly to the way of people's behavior. However, common senses informs me that the behavior of a person, especially like the sentences his or her talking or the behavior his or her taking, is automatic and somewhat self-motion that cannot really and accurately associate with the person's internal belief. For instance, assuming that we saw a monk, that is a person being prescribed cannot eating meat anymore for his belief, eat a piece of meat for the reason that there is nothing he can eat and he is significant hungry for about eating nothing lasting four days long. Is this act offending against his ideas and values? Undoubtedly not! It is just a person's nature living behavior and nobody could blame him for that essence nature of alive. I admit that this example is somewhat extreme. However, in our daily life, there also exist a myriad of conditions that could demonstrate my conclusion such as the act of a person's response to aggressive behavior is also an instinct action that cannot relation to his or her ideas and values about a society.
Finally, I have to mention some other situations such as in the third world countries that warm and food are their basic problems and they have no time, money and experiences to concern their look, dress and act.
For that reason, people's look is strikingly common like rough skin and thin body, people's dress also has the simple and somewhat lamentable purpose--prevent feeling cold.
Even the act of people is a little common for the reason that they barely have that condition to think about their own internalization and belief. Consequently, how can we observing the appearance and behavior of those people to know their society's ideas and values?
In conclusion, the speaker's assertion is not without merit when it comes to some special situations such as in some particular ceremonies like religious service. In that condition, people's look, dress and even act clearly reflect the society's ideas and values. However, in other vast situations, especially our common life, we cannot assure a society's ideas and values by simply observing the appearance and behavior of its people.
