Is our country a great one?
Whenever faced with such question, many aspects such as the total national power, the famous artists, rulers and scientists of the country and the general welfare of the people jump into our mind. So long as the issue is a complex one, the evaluation is not easy to make. From my point of view, however, the general welfare is the basis if a country is to be prospering, while the achievement of great few is a necessary aspect of a country's comprehensive national power. The development of a nation may lean to one side a little, but it mustn't underestimate either, in which a balance is called in accordance to the country's unique condition.
A country is consisted of not only its land, its great ones, but also millions of ordinary people that work to construct the country .Thus, if the properties and living rights of them are not ensured; it’s hard for the country to develop its technology and military power. Take the Soviet Union for example. The country that used to be one of the two leading forces of the world paid so much attention on the military power that it neglected the basic acquisition of its citizen. To the year 1989, the country was almost collapsed under its own pressure of starvation. Though there were many reasons that counted for the dissolution of the union, one that cannot be neglected was its ignorance of the general welfare of its people. There exist countries in the world now that have the similar situation. Some countries in Mid-east are developing in an improper way with the growing prosperities of a few leading figures while the rest of its countrymen are left in poverty and even starvation. We can never consider such countries to be great ones.
Despite of the fundamental role of the general welfare, however, we cannot underrate the importance of the few eminent figures. India ,though not as wealthy as countries in Europe, found its status in the world partly because of its famous activist Gandhi and the poet Tagore,Rabindranath. America, on the other hand, gained its position of the leading power in today’s global family mostly through the great achievements of its leading countrymen. Without the three famous presidents Jorge Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Franklin D Roosevelt, I even can't imagine what the nation will be like. The numerous scientists also serve much in bringing the country to its high status; the new techniques that boom in every realms of science invented by the famous ones inevitably promote the country's overall greatness.
Furthermore, someone may argue that there exist some countries such as those Nordic ones that provide high welfare but inhabit few great figures. And again I will stress that the issue is a comprehensive one for we can not simply attribute a country's overall success to one side only. The Scandinavian countries are famous for its great welfare as well as its peaceful role in the world issues. The few aggressive eminent figures in politic may serves the other way, while in the realms of science and art, who can deny the vital value of Linnaeus the biologist and Anderson the writer?
So from the discussion presented above, we may easily arrive at the conclusion that in the complex issue of defining a country's importance, both the leading few and the general welfare of the commonalties plays a vital role. The prosperities of its countrymen serve the basis of a country's development while the achievement of the great figures promotes its overall position in the world. After all, it's our own responsibility to look into the current circumstances of our own country and find a developing way that fits best.
