I agree with the author’s assertion that for the sake of self-improving and making the best choices, people should better to learn to think and act independently. After all, improving one’s own ability is indisputable the best way accessing to success. Yet, we could not totally deny that copying the role models’ methods is, to some degree, a short cut to get close to the success. In order to make it more sense, my point of view is discussed as follows.

For one thing, the implicit rationale behind the author’s statement is that only improving ourselves could we make our choices. Copying, in some ways, would be of help for our self-improving for the reason that what we copies is the elite sectors from the previous records which saves a lot energy and time for us to seek the truth during our own study process. Also, copying offers us a shortcut to learn about the predecessors’ experience which would be of help to distinguish the rights and wrongs. Moreover, copying is a way to absorb the previous experience during whose process that we would be prevented from being addicted to our own impractical illusions which ultimately lead to unnecessary efforts.
Secondly, granted that thinking, acting independently and making choices by our own is the best way of self-improving, we ignore the fact that to a certain extent, the velocity of this method is not as fast as copying when it comes to the effect. Just as the several ways listed above cost such a lot of time for us to improve ourselves, copying, as a matter of fact, reveals its advantages on the speed and convenience. This is why we need professors to pass on their knowledge to us other than we learn by ourselves.
Although copying is a way accessing to success, making choices by our own can yet be regarded as another method. After all, it is the result of self-improving——thinking and acting independently which leads to the full range development other than unilateral improvement arise from copying. Besides, as the experience accumulated during our own process of thinking and acting is far more valuable than the one copied from the predecessors’ thus becoming the inexhaustible source in the afterwards development. Moreover, thinking and acting independently has the possibility that overthrowing the previous fallacious theory and restore the truth. Possible example is Galilei who is hailed as the “father of modern science” gave a denial to the theory of velocity of Aristotle, who dominated the authoritative views. The truth reveals in front of us just because of the Galilei’s query towards Aristotle’s theory and his spirit of chasing the truth by his own.
In the final analysis, while seeking the best way of self improvement, aptly copying the previous experience is advocated. Meanwhile, thinking, acting independently is also indisputable for making the best choice for our own for the reason that only in this way can we get the improvement of ourselves, and the advancement of the society.
