Do the arts reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society, as the speaker maintain?
In my view the speaker unfairly generalizes. Admittedly, the arts obviously reflect the societal hidden ideas and impulse. However, I fundamentally disagree with the notion that not only arts but also other aspects could reveal the same thing.
It is true that arts reflect the ideas and impulses of a society, people also can be affected by the individuals works. Van Gogh's helianthus exhibits his love and seek to life. Seglin's The Catcher In The Rye mirror the circumstance of the US society after the World War II. Beethoven's Symphony Fate transmit a faith of contending to difficulties.
Yet, many arts can not reveal the ideas and impulses of a society but more about the artists' inside world and ideology. This frequently engenders arts break away reality or even distort reality. There are many gloomy societies in the history, lots of artists reflect society can not but to violate the societal actuality. For instance, what the great number artifacts mirrored in the Feudal Society is flattering to the dominator but not the social gloomy.
To reveal a social ideas and impulses not the arts but also other aspects could achieve that. Political institutions could reflect the societal characteristics and directions of a country.
In the final analysis, I concede the arts mirror the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society. Nevertheless, many arts can not reveal the ideas and impulse of a society but more about the artists' inner world and ideology. Furthermore, not only the arts but also other aspects could reveal the ideas and impulses of a society.
