Does one can tell much about people’s attitudes and interests, even a society’s ideas and value by observing the appearance and behavior of those people? The speaker claims so and I agree with him in some cases. However, in many other respects It is not comprehensive to realize a society’s ideas and values merely through appearance and behaviors while ignoring other elements including historical research and cultural acknowledge.

One thing I have to admit is that many features of people’s dress and behaviors demonstrate what exist around us, and even perform as the micro pictures of the whole society at times. As for the reasons, we can see that every individual is actually the cell in the community, and no one can totally isolate himself from others. This is a kind of human nature. Thus, a society’s ideas and values must have imposed great influence on every people’s look, dress and act. This can explain why we often find some traces which seem to adhere to the society.  

Among styles of people’s life, dress may be the most outstanding example. As far as we know, Americans prefer to wear relaxing apparel such like jeans and T-shirts, which reveals attitudes involves convenience and open-mind. It also indicates that people from America desire to grab freedom. When we refer to people in Afghan, through the TV and newspaper, we know they always dress in black cloth, and women wear veils. It reflects not only unfair role of a woman in Afghan’s society, but also a dominant role that religious doctrine play in people’s daily life.

Another example involves the action of people. We can see many scenes including kisses in France, through which we can tell French are influenced by romanticism. English behave in genteel and respective action towards one another, because society pay a vast majority of attention to manners. Moreover, Americans develop a habit that they like to hug with others if they had not met each other for long time, which maybe stem of their open mind. Therefore, it’s believed that we can find many evidence about actions are in accordance with the values and ideas of society.

Having recognized the relation between people’s appearance and society’s values, by no means can we deny that it is obviously not all-inclusive. Our eyes often can’t tell us truths according to the fact the society is complicated as well as the human nature is not superficial. So in many cases only through the way people look, dress and act we fail to find a society’s idea and values. Especially in modern times, the trend of globalization makes us to consider companied with many other elements including historical research and cultural acknowledge. For example, people in China are influenced generally by other countries such as America since the reform and open policy enacted. More and more people like to wear jeans and T-shirts, which reveals open-minded trend in China. However, most of Chinese appear to be modest because of the influence of Confucianism. Rather than exploring by appearances and behaviors, we need to learn in historical and cultural level. Could we say Many people are modest in other countries based on the influence of Confucianism?

In sum, it’s safe to say that in order to learn a society’s idea and value, not only we refer to the observation of people’s appearance and behavior, but also we need to have a deep step through social research and cultural acknowledge.

When we talk about the way people look, dress, and act, in some situations, it do reveal their attitudes and interests. However, people's appearances are very likely to be influenced by the surroundings. In addition, those who want to learn about a society's ideas and values must keep in mind that it is not only reflected by the people's customs and habits.

In the first place, we can tell about some attitudes and interests of a society from its people's outlooks and actions. A society with many people who are obese may pay more attention to indulgence and comfortable life rather than physical exercise and healthy life. A society whose citizens wear colourful clothes is like to accept the fashion styles, while a society whose citizens like to wear traditional costumes, such as Japan, places more emphasis on traditions.what's more, a society, like China, with the mass who have genteel and respectful behaviors lay more attention to people's dignity, and people in those society are much more respect for others and more tolerance of other people's different ideas or attitudes. Form this point of view, the way people look, wear and act serves as an important part in reflecting the particulars of a society.

However, we should keep in mind that those appearances and activities of a society's people can be easily affected by the circumstances. Since it is the people who decide what to wear or how to act, they can act in different styles, if not totally adverse,  to the public according to the surroundings and their own needs. In the sixties and seventies of China, most people wore the blue clothes in the same style. Can we simply draw a conclusion that the ideas and attitudes of people at that time are rigid? Absolutely no. It is the society's situations of that time that made the people cover their free minds with those clothes. And after the reform and open policy, people in China changed their outlooks in a short time, which reflected the strong aspiration of freedom in their deep heart. In short, the environments surround the people play an important role in deciding people's outlooks. Therefore, in some circumstance, people's customs and actions can not reflect a society properly.

What's more, other elements such as traditions and customs, economics and politics, and culture of a society which also reflect the society values and ideas can not be ignored in analyzing it. Without the traditions and customs, it is hard for one to learn the old ideas and basic foundations of a society; without the economics and politics, it is not possible for one to draw out one society's current values; without the culture, no matter it is traditional or contemporary, it is difficult for one to fabric a comprehensive system of a society's ideas. So all in all, in order to understand a society comprehensively, one needs to explore the society in more respects rather than only focus on the peoples appearances or actions.

From what have been discussed above, we can make a conclusion that we can learn something about a society from people if we can exclude the influences of environments on them. In addition, we'd better to learn the society in a full respects for the totally and thoroughly understanding.

This assertion can hold water to some extent, but it is too general and absolute. The society’s idea immerse into every aspect of people’s life, and it is so hidden that cannot be embodied correctly simply by the exterior appearance of people.

No one can be completely the same with another person on this planet. Everyone has his own habit and method of thinking, just as the saying goes:” 1000 readers may have 1000 different Hamlet in heart.” Therefore, the way they look, dress and act can embody their personal taste and specific design for life. For instance, when contact with artists, who are said to be particularly sensitive about life style, we can often find that their way of dressing and speaking are different from what ordinary people are accustomed to, and may hard for us to understand thoroughly. Sometimes, they are described as strange and queer or someone refer to them as fashion and trend. In fact, this is just their taste, the result of personal choices, which reveals their own attitudes and interests.

Another factor which will influence the way people dress is social customs. As human beings are the basic elements of society, and they are influenced continuously by each other and thus, shape the conception and value of the whole community, the appearance of them also demonstrates the society’s ideas. Everyone who lives in the society is the carrier of the values of his own country. For instance, the color the wedding dress for bride in western countries is white, which is the symbol of purity and integrity, while in China, people prefers red as the lucky color in the wedding ceremony. The disparity of choice of color is the concrete example of how society’s idea decides people’s look and dress.

There exists another possibility that the ways people dress neither connect with his personal interests nor embody specific social values. Many people don’t care about their appearances. For example, many scientists devote his all efforts and enthusiasm into his researches and do not have time to design what he will look like. Einstein is one of them. He wore worn clothes and didn’t cut his hair. No one can judge him as a leading authority in scientific realm simply from his appearance. Moreover, as the globalization becomes the main stream of today’s world, people from all over the world may just follow the same fashion. People in China no longer wear Han Fu, the traditional clothes dates back to Han Dynasty in China, and the daily clothes for Japanese women is no longer only kimono. People in every quarter of the earth may dress like the same. In this sense, the particularity of one nation disappears, and the assimilation of society begins to play the key role.

Based on the  arguments above, we can safely draw the conclusion that no matter the target of our observation is a person, or a society, the exterior aspects is helpful but not sufficient to reflect the interior part. We need more study work by different measures as many as possible, to make a more comprehensive and profound judgment.

The speaker considers that the society’s thoughts and values could be represented by inspecting the people’s appearance and action which might express their feelings and interests. I strongly propose this point of view. However, it is too unilateral to illustrate the attitude of society completely. The costume and behavior could only represent a part of human’s mind.



I admittedly propose that in some circumstances, such the person’s behavior as the way they look could express their feelings and tastes. Since it is the window of human’s mind that the eyes have always been. Such feelings as anger, temper, and happiness might be reflected from the eyes for that human’s organs could interconnect each other, and they have been organized into a dynamic integration. And then eyes have play an important role in communicate with the outside world so that eyes have been thought as the second ‘mouth’ of human. Traditional Chinese medical science has been the most ancient medicine and the most efficacious method to cure disease. When diagnosing, the doctor has made a diagnosis by inspecting the patients’ eyes and such phanerous organs as tongues. it is obvious that these organs would show the human’s state of mind.



However, we should not evaluate the thoughts and values only by see the humans’ appearance and behavior. Since value is a relative ethic value which helps people make the decisions. And it is considered that the people’s motive and behavior have been dominated by the values and thoughts. So undoubtedly, the behaviors could show the superficial thoughts which people have always done; however, it is just one of the expression of mind, in order to explore humans’ inner mind, necessarily through communicating with them and reading their compositions, can one get a deeper research about the human’s value. Voltaire, a French Enlightenment writer and philosopher was known for his wit and his defense of civil liberties. Shall we comprehend his values and moral standard only by taking a glimpse of his look or expression? Only if we have a intensive research on his literature and the contribution which he has made during the French Revolution, we would make sense his values more integrated.



On the other hand, the value of society is a set of humans’ values and the representation of the ethic and moral standard in that period. It could be evaluated from all over the society life. Whether it has represented a good value or not would determine the trend of the development of society, reflect whether the community is prosperous or not. It is the dynamic integration of the human values. So for the purpose of inspecting the society value, we should not only study the famous few’ values, but also consider of all the aspects of the life of the humans, then integrate them into an compatible compound which could be a complete research on society value.




In sum, it is incomplete to evaluate the human value by only the expressions and behaviors, for an integrated analysis of value, human’s literature and career should be taken a consideration. By analyzing the human value combined with the inspection of human’s daily life, society value would be observed completely.

My view to the statement is that in many cases the way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. Superficially, one can tell something about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people. However, to learn the ideas and values more deeply, we need to take other elements into consideration.

To begin with, we can learn the attitudes and interests of a person from the way he/she looks, dresses, and acts. There are many examples in our daily life. Jim becomes excited when hearing pop songs; this indicates that he is interested in music. Lucy often takes notes of daily news which implies that she is an earnest girl and interested in news. Likely, from our own experience and the observations of a person’s behavior and appearance, we can usually judge his/her interests and attitudes.

However, even the interests and attitudes of a person can be told through the way he/she looks, dresses and acts; we can only tell some superficial things about society’s ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people. There are several reasons. First, many hidden elements of a society, such as the customs and rules, cannot be seen just by observing the clothes and actions of its civilians. Second, from the behavior and appearance of its people, we can only have a partial impression to a society. For example, when visiting in a foreign country, we actually only visit some typical places, like famous universities. These places may give us wrong signals and information about the values and ideas of a society, because there are special rules in these environments. Third, things we tell are usually based on our own experience and knowledge. So we may make mistake if we don’t familiar with the criteria of a society. For instance, body distance varies from culture to culture. In some cultures, it is quite normal for people to stand close together. While Americans talk about invasion of their space. Therefore, we can only tell little about the values and ideas by observing the appearance and behavior of its people.

Moreover, to learn these ideas and values more deeply, we should consider other elements such as tradition, history, custom, culture, religion, modernization and so on. (这里不知道该怎么写了)

In sum, we can tell little about the ideas and values of a society by merely observing the appearance and behavior of its people. To learn more, we need to stay there long enough and feel the lives of local civilians.

I admittedly propose that in some circumstances, such the person’s behavior as the way they look could express their feelings and tastes. （这里前后衔接的不是太好吧，前面给出了自己的论点，但是突然跳到了eyes上，其实后面的部分就是举了个例子，然后就这个例子进行分析）
Since it is the window of human’s mind that the eyes have always been. Such feelings as anger, temper, and happiness might be reflected from the eyes for that human’s organs could interconnect each other, and they have been organized into a dynamic integration. And then eyes have play an important role in communicate with the outside world so that eyes have been thought as the second ‘mouth’ of human. Traditional Chinese medical science has been the most ancient medicine and the most efficacious method to cure disease. When diagnosing, the doctor has made a diagnosis by inspecting the patients’ eyes and such phanerous organs as tongues. it is obvious that these organs would show the human’s state of mind （世界上对中医有争议，我感觉用这个中医的例子不是太好。）.

However, we should not evaluate the thoughts and values only by seeing the humans’ appearance and behavior. Since value is a relative ethic value which helps people make the decisions. And it is considered that the people’s motivation and behavior have been dominated by the values and thoughts. So undoubtedly, the behaviors could show the superficial thoughts which people have always done(这几句是一个因果关系的句子，因果分开了不合适吧); however, it is just one aspect of the expression of mind, in order to explore humans’ inner mind, necessarily through communicating with them and reading their compositions, can one get a deeper research about the human’s value. Voltaire, a French Enlightenment writer and philosopher was known for his wit and his defense of civil liberties. Shall we comprehend his values and moral standard only by taking a glimpse of his look or expression? Only if we have a intensive research on his literature and the contribution which he has made during the French Revolution, we would make sense his values more integrated.

On the other hand, the value of society is a set of humans’ values and the representation of the ethic and moral standard in that period. It could be evaluated from all over the social life. Whether it has represented a good value or not would determine the trend of the development of a society, reflect whether the community is prosperous or not. It is the dynamic integration of the human values. So for the purpose of inspecting the society value, we should not only study the famous few’ values, but also consider of all the aspects of the life of the humans, then integrate them into an compatible compound which could be a complete research on society value.

In sum, it is incomplete to evaluate the human value by only the expressions and behaviors, for an integrated analysis of value, human’s literature and career should be taken a consideration. By analyzing the human value combined with the inspection of human’s daily life, society value would be observed completely.

总结：整篇文章的大的论点是比较清晰的，每段中一些处理不当的地方我已经说明了。词汇方面建议尽量先自己想，等写完修改的时候再查。

这篇文章对于我来说感觉很难，很多细节的问题我还是很糊涂的，希望在群里面好好讨论下。

三、社会的思想和价值观是抽象的，很难人们的通过外表和行为观测出来。如道家“无为而治”的思想。
四、有些人的行为虽然是从自身需要出发，但是却与社会的价值观背道而驰。如果以他们的行为代表整个社会的思想，则会误解这个社会。例子：抢劫、贪污。
五、总结。

The speaker claims that one can understand a society's ideas and values via observing the appearance and behavior of its people. I concur with this assertion to some extend due to the way people look, dress, and act can reflect their attitudes and interests sometimes. My view will be substantiated by the following discussion.

Indeed, people's appearance and behavior can show a spirit of a society which reflects thoughts and values of a society. Compared the clothing, food, and transportation before Reform with that after Reform in China, we can interpret the point. Before Reform, people's clothes only have four kinds of colors: black, white, gray and yellow. When one walks along a street, he or she perhaps feels too monotonous of people's wearing, and people have no facial expression. Nowadays when one takes a walk in a city, he or she can see people's dress is various one from another, and people smile a lot. The difference reflects the change of an attitude of people which is more opening after Reform. Before Reform, people like to eat refined power, and used coarse to feed pigs. But now, people prefer coarse to refined power because coarse is much healthier which people pay more attention to. Before Reform, in order to save money, people chose to walk from Tian Jin, a big city in China, to Bei Jin, the capital of China. But now, in order to save time, many people take air plane to go back and forth between the two cities. Because time is much more important in modern people's mind. Hence, in these cases, we can tell much about a society's ideas and values by people's look and behavior.

However, a society's ideas and values are always abstract which cannot be reflected sufficiently by people's appearance and behavior. Its ideas and values usually influence people imperceptibly. Daoism, one kind of values in China, advocates that the method of managing a country is doing nothing which is hard to understand literally. Emperor Jing of Han, a great emperor of Han Dynasty in China, used this idea to take in charge of the nation, and made huge progress like the economic recoveried, people lived happy life. But through people's appearance and action, we can hardly find out anything of this kind of idea.

Moreover, some people's behavior violate a society's values, such as robbery, corruption. If one use their activities to represent a society's values, then he or she will misunderstand the society.

To sum up, although people's appearance and behavior can show a spirit of a society in some cases, they cannot totally represent a society's ideas and values. Only examing them case-by-case baises, we can understand a society's ideas and values.

There are many examples in our daily life. Jim becomes excited when hearing pop songs; this indicates that he is interested in music. Lucy often takes notes of daily news which implies that she is an earnest girl and interested in news. Likely, from our own experience and the observations of a person’s behavior and appearance, we can usually judge his/her interests and attitudes. 第二段分论点是了解人们的态度和兴趣。这一段感觉不是很切题。 However, even the interests and attitudes of a person can be told through the way he/she looks, dresses and acts; we can only tell some superficial things about society’s ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people. There are several reasons.（这句话写在这里显得太八股了。） First, many hidden elements of a society, such as the customs and rules, cannot be seen just by observing the clothes and actions of its civilians.（这一点论证不充分） Second, from the behavior and appearance of its people, we can only have a partial impression to a society. For example, when visiting in（删除） a foreign country, we actually only visit some typical places, like famous universities. These places may give us wrong signals and information about the values and ideas of a society, because there are special rules in these environments. （这里感觉也论证不充分，可以举例说明special rules有些什么内容）Third, things we tell are usually based on our own experience and knowledge. So we may make mistake if we don’t familiar with the criteria of a society. For instance, body distance varies from culture to culture.
