The speaker alleges that the major cities of a society can reflect its most important characteristics, and studying those major cities is the best way for us to understand this society. In my opinion, it is true that big cities are the representatives of the political, economic and new cultural characteristics of our current society. However, if we want to know more about the most traditional characteristics of our society, we also need to learn about the rural areas of our society.
In the first place, with the development of our society, major cities always play an important role in the politics and economics over the span of human history. In the old days, the cities where the emperors lived are the symbols of power, and there were a lot of magnificent buildings in them. So by studying those significant constructions can we obtain some useful knowledge about the dynasty in nowadays, just as by studying the Forbidden city in Beijing, we can know the living styles of the past emperor. In nowadays, major cities especially the capitals of different nations are also the centers of politics. You can get more about the society political characteristics in those cities rather than the other normal cities or even the villages which have little chance to get touch with the political events.
In the second place, because of the major cities have lots of people, it is more convenient for the development of business. Major cities are the trade centers in human history. In the past, they were the centers of goods trade, while in nowadays they are the financial centers. If you want to know the economical situations of America, do a survey in the New York; Shanghai for China, and London for England. It is ridiculous for you to find the economical characteristics of one society from the rural areas where the development is not as advanced as the major cities which are the most important part-and-parcel of the economics of a society.
In the third place, major cities are also the centers of new cultures. Because of their development of economics, major cities would make some opportunities for people struggling for a better life. As a result, many people all around the nation come to major cities with their own cultures. Just because so many different cultures converge together in major cities, new culture can develop from those major cities more easily. The culture of the United States is an apt example to illustrate this point. Since it is an immigrant country, people from different countries with different cultures come to the major cities and influence the development of American culture, which eventually results in nowadays American culture such as pursuiting freedom.
However, when it comes to the traditional culture and custom of a society, the use of learning about major cities diminishes. Because of the interaction among different cultures in major cities, it is obvious that traditional culture cannot keep their substantial basis. In order to fully understand those traditions and customs, we need to investigate the rural villages where the traditions and customs are less possible to be affected by the huge changement of the outside. Let's take the United States as an example again. Studying the rural villages of the original residents instead of major cities is the best way to master the characteristics of the American Indian. From this point of view, for the best understanding of the society, the studying of other places rather than major cities is also indispensable.
From what we have been discussed above, we can draw a conclusion that major cities are the centers of politics, economics and new culture. So they can represent the major characteristics of our current society, and it is also a useful and convenient way for us to study of our society though analysing the major cities. However, the studying of other elements is also needed for the thoroughly understanding of a society.

I disagree with the opinion with the speaker. My view to the issue is that one can only understand several characteristics of a society by studying its major cities. However,(这里好像没有转折的意思) to make a best understand of the most important characteristics, one should also study middling cities, small counties and villages.
To understand the characteristics of a society, one usually needs to study several aspects of it. These include that culture, history, customs, people, modernization, trends and so on. And the most important characteristics are contained in those general ones and varying(vary) as the development of society.
Studies of major cities can make us understand some characteristics of a society and following several reasons contribute to this point. First, major cities are the centers of a country, and most of businesses, factories, research centers, museums, etc., are concentrated in major cities. For example, they preserve lots of old buildings and much significant historical data. All these are helpful for visitors to understand the local history. Second, people from different parts of one country want to leave(live) in the major cities, since there are more opportunities there. They bring the customs into these cities. And when traveling in a big city, we often can feel the diversity of customs. So, through studying the big city, we know many customs of the country. Third, cultures in major cities are well preserved and protected. Contrast to small counties and villages, the culture preservations can be often concerned and supported. For example, there are museums to protect local culture. We can usually gain enough information to study them, such as an important campaign. Finally, it is the major cities that hold the direction of the whole society. Reformations and innovations frequently happen first in big cities, as they are exoteric and flourish. Therefore, based on these reasons, we can conclude that from the studies of major cities, we can understand some characteristics of a society.
However, to make a best understanding of the most important characteristics of a society, we also need to study the middling cities, small counties and villages. One reason is that modernizations have led to the decrease of cultural differences in different cities. For example, when traveling in New York, what we see first is skyscrapers, big advertising signboards, crowed of people and cars. Similar scene will appear when visiting Beijing. Now in the major cities of China, you frequently see MacDonald and Kentucky, just as you see in America. Yet, more local cultures are usually preserved in middling cities, small counties and villages. For example, customs are usually handed down generation by generation. So, it is also important to study these districts.
In sum, one can not understand the most characteristics of a society just by study(studying) the major cities. We also need to study the middling cities, small counties and villages.
