72"One can best understand the most important characteristics of a society by studying its major cities."

I disagree with the opinion with the speaker. My view to the issue is that one can only understand several characteristics of a society by studying its major cities. However, to make a best understand of the most important characteristics, one should also study middling cities, small counties and villages.

To understand the characteristics of a society, one usually needs study several aspects of it. These include that culture, history, customs, people, modernization, trends and so on. And the most important characteristics are contained in those general ones and varying as the development of society.

Studies of major cities can make us understand some characteristics of a society and following several reasons contribute to this point. First, Major cities are the centers of a country, and most of businesses, factories, research centers, museums, etc., are concentrated in major cities. For example, they preserve lots of old buildings and much significant historical data. All these are helpful for visitors to understand the local history. Second, people from different parts of one country want to leave in the major cities, since there are more opportunities there. They bring the customs into these cities. And when traveling in a big city, we often can feel the diversity of customs. So, through studying the big city, we know many customs of the country. Third, cultures in major cities are well preserved and protected. Contrast to small counties and villages, the culture preservations can be often concerned and supported. For example, there are museums to protect local culture. We can usually gain enough information to study them, such as an important campaign. Finally, it is the major cities that hold the direction of the whole society. Reformations and innovations frequently happen first in big cities, as they are exoteric and flourish. Therefore, based on these reasons, we can conclude that from the studies of major cities, we can understand some characteristics of a society.

However, to make a best understanding of the most important characteristics of a society, we also need to study the middling cities, small counties and villages. One reason is that modernizations have led to the decrease of cultural differences in different cities. For example, when traveling in New York, what we see first is skyscrapers, big advertising signboards, crowed of people and cars. Similar scene will appear when visiting Beijing. Now in the major cities of China, you frequently see MacDonald and Kentucky, just as you see in America. Yet, more local cultures are usually preserved in middling cities, small counties and villages. For example, customs are usually handed down generation by generation. So, it is also important to study these districts.

In sum, one can not understand the most characteristics of a society just by study the major cities. We also need to study the middling cities, small counties and villages.

The speaker's statement is quite reasonable and compelling. A society's characteristics could be represented by its major cities. The affect and large number of population can substantiate the statement. We also should notice that the rural areas can affect the major cities.

To begin with, major cities are centre of politics, culture and economic, which are small cities and rural areas' social model.  For example, when Wall Street dismisses its staff, then we can know that America may be in an economic crisis. When women are apt to work in the major cities, then we can know that there were feminism movement, and so forth. The reason of these phenomenons is that the other cities and rural areas always learn from the major cities because the major cities stand for the latest culture, qualities of counties economy and advanced polity. Thus, trough observing the major cities can we obtain the mainstream of culture, economic quality and politics system.

In addition, citizens of major cities are consisted of people from all of country who bring the characteristics of their hometown. For example, the New York has numerous major companies and many excellent universities. As a consequence, enormous people will go to New York for working or studying. When they communicate with others, they assimilate others culture and affect others either, then there is a combination of culture, thousands of combination form the culture of major cities which can represent culture of many areas, including normal cities and rural areas. Thus the most important characteristics of culture will be represented in the culture of major cities.

However, some countries have a few areas communicate little with outside; in other words, they barely are not affected by outside world. It is also the reason that many explores go to the mountains or some other areas people hardly achieve. For example, there are few big cities in the Tibet because of the awful climate, but there is an important and amazing phenomenon in the Tibet. There are lots of people pilgrimage in a particular period time, the most amazing affairs is that they worship on bended knees every step from their hometown to the Potala Palace. The amazing phenomenon will never be discovered if there are no person goes to the plateau where climate is extremely abominable. Thus, noticing the rural areas is very important to discover societies’ characteristics.

To sum up, the affect and numerous people of major cities decide that it contains the bulk of characteristics of a society. And we also need to notice the rural areas which may also be a important supplement to characteristics embodied by major cities.

The speaker alleges that the major cities of a society can reflect its most important characteristics, and studying those major cities is the best way for us to understand this society. In my opinion, it is true that big cities are the representatives of the political, economic and new cultural characteristics of our current society. However, if we want to know more about the most traditional characteristics of our society, we also need to learn about the rural areas of our society.

In the first place, with the development of our society, major cities always play an important role in the politics and economics over the span of human history. In the old days, the cities where the emperors lived are the symbols of power, and there were a lot of magnificent buildings in them. So by studying those significant constructions can we obtain some useful knowledge about the dynasty in nowadays, just as by studying the Forbidden city in Beijing, we can know the living styles of the past emperor. In nowadays, major cities especially the capitals of different nations are also the centers of politics. You can get more about the society political characteristics in those cities rather than the other normal cities or even the villages which have little chance to get touch with the political events.

In the second place, because of the major cities have lots of people, it is more convenient for the development of business. Major cities are the trade centers in human history. In the past, they were the centers of goods trade, while in nowadays they are the financial centers. If you want to know the economical situations of America, do a survey in the New York; Shanghai for China, and London for England. It is ridiculous for you to find the economical characteristics of one society from the rural areas where the development is not as advanced as the major cities which are the most important part-and-parcel of the economics of a society.

In the third place, major cities are also the centers of new cultures. Because of their development of economics, major cities would make some opportunities for people struggling for a better life.  As a result, many people all around the nation come to major cities with their own cultures. Just because so many different cultures converge together in major cities,  new culture can develop from those major cities more easily. The culture of the United States is an apt example to illustrate this point. Since it is an immigrant country, people from different countries with different cultures come to the major cities and influence the development of American culture, which eventually results in nowadays American culture such as pursuiting freedom.

However, when it comes to the traditional culture and custom of a society, the use of learning about major cities diminishes. Because of the interaction among different cultures in major cities, it is obvious that traditional culture cannot keep their substantial basis. In order to fully understand those traditions and customs, we need to investigate the rural villages where the traditions and customs are less possible to be affected by the huge changement of the outside. Let's take the United States as an example again. Studying the rural villages of the original residents instead of major cities is the best way to master the characteristics of the American Indian. From this point of view, for the best understanding of the society, the studying of other places rather than major cities is also indispensable.

From what we have been discussed above, we can draw a conclusion that major cities are the centers of politics, economics and new culture. So they can represent the major characteristics of our current society, and it is also a useful and convenient way for us to study of our society though analysing the major cities. However, the studying of other elements is also needed for the thoroughly understanding of a society.

修改stone

I disagree with the opinion with the speaker. My view to the issue is that one can only understand several characteristics of a society by studying its major cities. However,(这里好像没有转折的意思) to make a best understand of the most important characteristics, one should also study middling cities, small counties and villages.
To understand the characteristics of a society, one usually needs to study several aspects of it. These include that culture, history, customs, people, modernization, trends and so on. And the most important characteristics are contained in those general ones and varying(vary) as the development of society.
Second, people from different parts of one country want to leave(live) in the major cities, since there are more opportunities there.
Yet, more local cultures are usually preserved in middling cities, small counties and villages. For example, customs are usually handed down generation by generation. So, it is also important to study these districts.
In sum, one can not understand the most characteristics of a society just by study(studying) the major cities. We also need to study the middling cities, small counties and villages.

Issue72: One can best understand the most important characteristics of a society by studying its major cities.

In China, when we talk about the most important characteristics of the society, we may think about long history, various nationalities and high rapid of economic development. One can understand some of the characters listed above via studying major cities. However, other characters should be understood through studying other cities which are less important relatively. My view can be substantiated by the following discussion.

Major cities can partly reflect some of the most important characters, such as long history and high rapid of development. Beijing, one major city and the capital of China, has a long history. It used to be the capital of six dynasties of ancient China. And there exist lots of places of interests which were built hundreds years ago, like National Palace Museum, the Great Wall and Yuanmingyuan. A foreign friend once told me that when he visited Beijing, he felt China had a long history. Besides, as a survey conducted by Sina, a famous website company in China, reported that more than 80% of Chinese people consider that Beijing can reflect long history of China. Turning to another important character, fast developing, the major city which rushes into my head firstly is Shenzhen. It used to be a small fishing village in China twenty years ago, but now is one of the most modernization cities. Hence, in this case, one can understand some most
important characteristics by studying major cities.

However, the most important characteristics of a society are shown not only in major cities, but also in non-major cities. Just as we said above, Beijing can help people know Chinese long history, so does Kaifeng and Luoyang. The former is the capital of Song Dynasty, the latter is the capital of Tang Dynasty in ancient China. So if one wants to know Chinese history better, he or she should study many cities, not just the major cities.

Moreover, one can best understand the characteristics of various nationalities of China through studying Kunming which is not a major city. If one exam this character in Beijing, he or she will know little about it. But if one studies this in Kunming, he or she will gain a lot. Because Kunming has the most nationalities in China.

To sum up, through studying the major cities of a society, one cannot understand the most important characteristics sufficiently. Only studying cities of a society comprehensively, one can know them better.

In nowadays, major cities especially the capitals of different nations are also the centers of politics. You can get more about the society’s political characteristics in those cities rather than the other normal
ordinary cities or even the villages which have little chance to get touch with the political events.

In order to fully understand those traditions and customs, we need to investigate the rural villages where the traditions and customs are less possible to be affected by the huge changement

From this point of view, for the best understanding of the society, the studying of other places rather than major cities is also indispensable.

From what we have been discussed above, we can draw a conclusion that major cities are the centers of politics, economics and new culture. So they can represent the major characteristics of our current society, and it is also a(an) useful and convenient way for us to study of our society though analyzing the major cities. I strongly propose that the speaker’s view that through researching the major cities of the society, can one the majority of the community. However, the society consists of not only the bigger and more modernized cities, but also the small cities and the countries which account for more than 50 percentages of the society. Thus, it is not comprehensive to evaluate the society only to study the major cities.

Firstly, these major cities have governed a society’s politics and economics. Since it is the center of the politics and economics of the society that would play a dominant role in conducting the society, thus through evaluating its major cities, can one comprehend the development of economics and politics and the progress of the society. Then they are the symbols of modernization and human civilization, they represent the degree of prosper of a community, so that one can realize how prosperous a society would be from them. For instance, Shanghai is the economical center of China, and every trend of this city would trigger the trend of economic of China. When taking a look at it, one could realize the development of the China; it shows the pace of China.

On the other hand, necessarily through studying the modern cities, could one realize such the culture of the majority as the fashion. Since it is the accumulation of the newest culture, when an innovation comes out, it firstly has been spread in these cities, hence by means of studying the culture in these cities, could one trace the fashion of a society. Almost everyone has thought of that Paris is the stylish city all around the world, the researchers could comprehend the culture of France through realizing the culture of Paris, for it is the representation of France. Should one study the culture of France by means of study a distant city? Absolutely not.

However, small-scale cities is also a component of a society. No matter how dominant major cities would be, they could not represent all the aspects of a society, such aspects as important as economics as custom and traditions might be shown more outstanding than in those cities. Since along with the development of human civilization, traditions and custom have gradually been replaced by modernization of city. The reflection of tradition seems more and more in the modernized person. In contrast, with less affected by the modernization, more traditions and custom have been reserved in these cities. In the small cities of Italy, there exists a tradition that when a new year comes, they will lay some olive branch in a barrel which is filled with water so that the next year would be better. And this tradition has disappeared from such cities as Rome and Milan. Thus sometimes some small cities could represent some respects which big cities could not.

All in all, when studying a society, researchers could first evaluate its primary cities, it is necessary because the dominant station of them in economics and politics. Then unless through studying the small-scale cities, one could not comprehend the community completely for the tradition and custom are as significant as the other aspects.

改yeshen

In China, when we talk about the most important characteristics of the society, we may think about long history, various nationalities and high rapid of economic development. One can understand some of the characters listed above via studying major cities. However, other characters should be understood through studying other cities which are less important relatively.

Though I consider cities have shown their significant effects on a society, we could not ignore the crucial effects countries exert. In fact, only by combining them together could one understand the society thoroughly.

Admittedly, major cities could reflect the characteristics of a society, such as economy, education, science and so forth. A nation always set its economic supporting priorities to its major cities for the reason that these cities are convenient to regulate, and these cities contribute most to the nation. Furthermore, in order to guarantee social safety and stability, governments always set the best safety guards in major cities. Thus, for all these advantages, one can learn too much of a society by studying its major cities.

Furthermore, with its convenient transportation, governments always located societal wealth in major cities in order to call people's attention and protection. For example, the United States located its central city in New York. There are so many regions in a society, but we could understand a society's main idea through visiting its major cities.

However, I consider we could not ignore the important far-away regions. Sometimes, we have to refer to other regions in order to fully understand a society. On the one hand, the religious places are always located in far-away regions, for the reason that religious people need quiet places to finish their rituals. At this time, we could acknowledge that the hidden ideas of a society always exist in far-away regions. On the other hand, some historical architecture are as well located in far-away regions which the major cities could not present. We could learn the history of a society from its far-away regions. These far-away could help us understand a society thoroughly.

In the end, I consider that though major cities are significant for a person to understand the characters of a society, yet we could not ignore the position of far-away regions. In order to understand a society thoroughly, one should not only visit its major cities, but also pay attention to its far-away regions.

I strongly propose that(agree with) the speaker’s view that through researching the major cities of the society, can one the majority of the community.(这句话有点问题,在改一下)However, the society consists of not only the bigger and more modernized cities, but also the small cities and the countries which account for more than 50 percentages of the society.

However, small-scale cities is also a component of a society. No matter how dominant major cities would be, they could not represent(of) all the aspects of a society, such aspects as important as economics as custom and traditions might be shown more outstanding than in those cities.
All in all, when studying a society, researchers could first evaluate its primary cities, it is necessary because the dominant station of them in economics and politics. Then unless through studying the small-scale cities, one could not comprehend the community completely for the tradition and custom are as significant as the other aspects.

When mentions China, a person from western countries may think of Beijing or Shanghai first, when refers to the US, New York City and Washington D.C should be the representatives, as for Japan, there is Tokyo which is understanding and impresses us most. The truth that cannot be denied is that nearly every country has its major cities that serve as the window for foreigners who try to understand the characteristics of this society. Therefore, the speaker claims that one can understand the society through observing its major cities carefully. As far as I am concerned, this assertion is actually a misunderstanding and wrong conception.

Admittedly, in some developed countries whose regional development is relatively balanced, and there exist no big gaps in financial and cultural conditions in different cities, to study the major cities is a good way to understand the whole situation. After all, big cities are usually the political, economic, or cultural centers of one country. For instance, in New York City of America, where different cultures have melted and inter-influenced naturally and spontaneously, we can always find traces of traditional American values there, such as ceaseless pursuit of freedom and liberty, emphasis on personal independence and stress on competition and cooperation. And it is the same case in Washington D.C. Like a highly developed country as the US, we can easily deduce some characteristics of American society from its major cities.

As for developing countries, things are different. Relatively speaking, the disparities between different regions in developing countries are extremely great. China is the biggest developing countries in the world nowadays, so we can just take the situation in China as an example. The world has seen the tremendous development speed of Chinese comprehensive national power there years, and Shanghai, has become an international metropolis. Some scholars even say that Shanghai has taken the place of London to be one of the most influential cities in the world. If we just see the living situations in Shanghai and jump to the conclusion that Chinese society is highly development, we’ll make a big mistake. In fact, there is a significant imbalance between the development of western regions and coastal areas in the east part of China. People in western provinces are still worrying for their daily supplies, not to mention higher pursuit of mental nourishment. Therefore, if the objective we want to understand is a big developing country like China, India and Brazil, the method of observing major cities maybe not helpful, even leads to a misconception.

Moreover, as we know the trend of globalization is spreading all over the world after WWII, we can find more similarities rather than peculiarities in metropolises of different country. These citizens follow the same fashion advertised by internet, enjoy the service of global chain enterprises, and buy goods imported from the same processing country. As a result, one may feel puzzled when try to identify the country simply through the living style of major cities. If we find that Washington D.C and Beijing are alike, then draw the conclusion that American society is almost the same with Chinese society. Without a shadow of doubt, it’s absurd.

Based on the discussion above, the conclusion is clear that major cities cannot always serve as the representatives of a country, especially in the net of global communication and cooperation. In fact, to most countries at the foundation bed of the pyramid of countries in the world, the cities of small or medium size can reflect the social characteristics more accurately, for the focuses of cultural development are mainly gathered here. People’s life in these places is the best embodiment of developmental levels at all respects in nationwide.
