ISSUE 56:
"The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."

Does the greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, as the speaker contends, rather than their contemporaries? I concede that to some extent the speaker overstates the significance of comments from those who live in later times. On balance, however, I fundamentally agree with the speaker, for the reason of being more objective and leaving enough time for demonstration.

Under certain situations, contemporaries can give appropriate commentary to others, for they were in the same concrete environment. To decide the greatness of individuals, certain criteria which include the specific social circumstances and unique social sense of worth are needed. And only those who live in the same historical period share the same criteria. Take Yue Fei, a famous general in Song Dynasty of China, for instance. His braveness of resisting foreign intruders is appreciated by Chinese people for a thousands of years until recently, when someone points out that it is not praiseworthy but reprehensible for Yue Fei to prevent China from a broader national unification, for the foreign intruders denoted at that time were just another ethnic group of China. Nevertheless, the current criteria are not applicable to evaluate the accomplishment of an historical hero at that time when social situation was quite different from now. Therefore, under specific history, the greatness of individual can only be determined by their contemporaries.

Under other situations, however, it is much more reliable for people live in a later time to decide the greatness of former individuals. The essential advantage is that later generations own a more generalized view that successfully avoids the weakness of contemporaries being not objective. People in different interest groups tend to hold different views towards the greatness of individuals for they are tempting to maintain their own profits. Thus, they are not assessing individuals in an objective way. One apt illustration of this point involves the evaluation of artworks. Vincent van gogh, one of the greatest artist in the world, was not a well-known artist until his death.  His pieces which contain great passion, grief, compassion and hope were only appreciated and valued by the later generations, whereas the art critics in his time who were in different styles just treat them as garbage of an insane person. This holds to almost every other fields of our society. Only later generations who have no conflicts of interest can objectively determine the greatness of individuals.

Under still other situations, the greatness of individuals cannot be identified for their theories are ahead of the conditions at that time. Only with the development of the public ability of recognition can the facts eventually prove those theories and the individuals' achievements can be accepted. Many examples from the fields of science serve to illustrate this point. Most of us heard of the story that Galileo dropped balls of the same material, but different masses, from the Leaning Tower of Pisa to demonstrate that their time of descent was independent of their mass. The theory was contrary to the mainstream view that heavy objects fall faster than lighter ones, in direct proportion to weight. People in that time felt hard to accept Galileo's theory until the later physical scientists using different methods and taking thousands of experiments proved it was true and Galileo's contribution to the world of physics is appreciated. Not only in the fields of science but also in other fields of science that the validity of a theory and the greatness of individuals can be recognized only by the later generations.

To sum up, lacking of sufficient objectivity and the fact that the process of testing truth needs time determines that contemporaries are not the best choice to decide the greatness of individuals. Later generations, who can use more objective criteria and own enough conditions to test truth, are more likely to realize the greatness of individuals.

The essential advantage is that later generations own a more generalized view that successfully avoids the weakness of contemporaries's being not objective.(这个长句其实可以拆成两句吧) People in different interest groups tend to hold different views towards the greatness of individuals for they are tempting to maintain their own profits.
梵高的例子其实和“People in different interest groups tend to hold different views towards the greatness of individuals for they are tempting to maintain their own profits”这句不太搭,不应该是利益上的问题,而是the works of Van Gogh went beyond the recognizance of anverage people and critics.

Under still other situations, the greatness of individuals cannot be identified for(可以换一种因果表达方式了) their theories are ahead of the conditions of social development at that time. Only with the development of the public ability of recognition can the facts eventually prove those theories and the individuals' achievements can be accepted. 到底是认知能力发展了,还是事实逐渐浮出水面了呢?)Many examples from the fields of science serve to illustrate this point. People in that time felt hard to accept Galileo's theory until the later physical scientists, using different methods and taking thousands of experiments, proved it was true and Galileo's contribution to the world of physics is finally appreciated. Not only in the fields of science but also in other fields of science(写错了吧) that the validity of a theory and the greatness of individuals can be recognized only by the later generations.

第一段让步,说部分情况同时代的人能够决定。但是这个certain situation没有说明确;

毕竟以前people were poorly educated,现在的people can infer the greatness of some persons with references and knowledge,然后举几个依靠比较生僻的技术或理论获诺贝尔奖的人,比如Dirac、Lamb等。

And only those who live in the same historical period share the same criteria这句话有点绝对. Take Yue Fei, a famous general in Song Dynasty of China, for instance. His braveness of resisting foreign intruders is appreciated by Chinese people for a thousands of years until recently, when someone points out that it is not praiseworthy but for Yue Fei to prevent China from a broader national unification, for the foreign intruders denoted at that time were just another ethnic group of China.

The essential advantage is that later generations own a more generalized view that successfully avoids the weakness of contemporaries being not objective People in different interest groups tend to hold different views towards the greatness of individuals for they are tempting to maintain their own profits. Thus, they are not assessing individuals in an objective way. One apt illustration of this point involves the evaluation of artworks. Vincent van gogh, one of the greatest artist in the world, was not a well-known artist until his death.  His pieces which contain great passion, grief, compassion and hope were only appreciated and valued by the later generations, whereas the art critics in his time who(去掉) were in different styles just treat them as garbage of an insane person. This holds to almost every other fields of our society. Only later generations who have no conflicts of interest can objectively determine the greatness of individuals.

Under still other situations, 囧~ the greatness of individuals cannot be identified for their theories are ahead of the conditions at that time.

ISSUE 56:
"The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."

DoesCan the greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, as the speaker contends, rather than their contemporaries?(第一句话问句很好,用一个rather than综述了一下) I concede that to some extent the speaker overstates the significance of comments from those who live in later times. On balance, however, I fundamentally agree with the speaker, for the reason of (少成分吧)being more objective and leaving enough time for demonstration.

Under certain situations, contemporaries can give appropriate commentary to others, for they wereare in the same concrete environment. To decide the greatness of individuals, certain criteria which include (depend on) the specific social circumstances and unique social sense of worth are needed.

Under other situations, however, it is much more reliable for people wholive in a later time to decide the greatness of former individuals. The essential advantage is that later generations own a more generalized view that successfully avoids the weakness of contemporaries (for not)being not objective. People in different interest groups tend to hold different views towards the greatness of individuals for they are tempting to maintain their own profits. Thus, they are not assessing individuals in an objective way.(我感觉这句话可以删去了,与前面有重复) One apt illustration of this point involves the evaluation of artworks. Vincent van gogh, one of the greatest artist in the world, was not a well-known artist until his death.  His pieces (加个逗号更清晰)which contain great passion, grief, compassion and hope were only appreciated and valued by the later generations, whereas the art critics in his time who were in different styles just treat them as garbage of an insane person. This holds to almost every other fields of our society. Only later generations who have no conflicts of interest can objectively determine the greatness of individuals.
Under still other situations, the greatness of individuals cannot be identified for their theories are ahead of the conditions at that timeahead of time 就好吧). Only with the development of the public ability of recognition can the factsthat eventually prove those theories and the individuals' achievements,(我感觉前后加以逗号后结构就明显清楚了很多) can be accepted. People in that time felt hard to accept Galileo's theory until the later physical scientistsby using different methods and taking thousands of experiments, proved that it was true and Galileo's contribution to the world of physics is appreciated. Not only in the fields of science but also in other fields of science that(where) the validity of a theory and the greatness of individuals can be recognized only by the later generations.
-++
To sum up, lacking of sufficient objectivity and the fact that the process of testing truth needs time determines that contemporaries are not the best choice to decide the greatness of individuals. (感觉不太对称,是不是可以改成:lacking of sufficient objectivity and ignoring the fact, that the process of testing truth needs time, determines that contemporaries are not the best choice to decide the greatness of individuals.Later generations, who can use more objective criteria and own enough conditions to test truth, are more likely to realize the greatness of individuals.
