Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student.
In general, I agree with the assertion that education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student. The chief reason is that this view accords with our personal experiences, and it was constantly proved to be correct in history. However, the speaker laid one-sided stress on that education should be specifically designed, which is not exactly correct.
Specifically designed education that is in line with interests and the individual needs can really be effective at most times. But we cannot say it will be effective only when it is specifically designed. For instance, Andersen, a Danish writer known for his fairy tales not receiving any formal education when he was a child, eventually became a famous writer in the world with just enthusiasm for writing. Unlike those students majoring in writing, Andersen had not got any education which is specifically designed, but he still achieved success. So at this point, it is not true.
But we have to admit that interests do make education much more effective. First, we often say that interest is the best teacher. If people get interested in something, he or she will surely try their best to do it and people like this can persist in doing one thing for a long time since their strong interests determine to persevere. Students can benefit a lot from their education if they concentrate on doing something and work hard enough for it. That is, W. A. Mozart, one of the most famous musicians in the world, became a composer when he was only six. Mozart was studious and showed strong interests in music, he could play Organ at four and practice composing at five. When his father took little Mozart to Vienna at his age of six, he stirred the whole city. Little Mozart spent much time in studying music instead of playing with his mates provides a good argument for my point that it was really his interest that made him insist on music and became so effective on it.
Secondly, when it comes to the individual needs, we can also find its significance to make people more effective. We cannot do everything just derives from our interests in this world, there must be something we do not like to do but we have to. But it does not mean that we will do it inefficiently if it meets our personal needs. People live for bread, but not everyone likes bread. I know that majority of basketball players in NBA did not like playing basketball when they were children. They made great efforts to train just because they could rely on this to get food from hunger.
Interests make us feel happy to get education, and we will do it consciously. The individual needs force people to study effectively to achieve their goals even they are not interested in. However, it is hard to imagine that education without interests and the individual needs can be effective and how people bind themselves to focus their attention on education. There is a classic example around me. Each term we have some subjects to learn but there are always some of them we have no interests in. Some of my classmates were always absent at these classes. But when the semester came to an end, they came back and studied quite hard in order to pass the exams since they were associated with whether they can graduate. To my surprise, most of them always got good results because of their high-efficiency study before the exams. But there were also some others who did not care about the scores failed the exams.
In sum, education which is not specifically designed can also be truly effective when it meets the individual needs and interests, but interest and personal needs are necessary, we need at least one of them. |
