48The following appeared in a newspaper article published in the country of Corpora.
"Twenty years ago, one half of all citizens in Corpora met the standards for adequate physical fitness as then defined by the national advisory board on physical fitness. Today, the board says that only one quarter of all citizens are adequately fit and suggests that spending too much time using computers may be the reason. But since overall fitness levels are highest in regions of Corpora where levels of computer ownership are also highest, it is clear that using computers has not made citizens less physically fit. Instead, as shown by this year's unusually low expenditures on fitness-related products and services, the recent decline in the economy is most likely the cause, and fitness levels will improve when the economy does."
两个结论:spending too much time using computers has not made citizens less physically fit, but for decline in the economy
The fitness levels will improve when the economy does
1.
时间不同,可能标准
不一样了(类比)
2.
fitness levels in the regions that mentioned above might decrease dramatically
3.
电脑拥有量高不等于经常适用电脑,不能得出使用电脑对身体无危害
4.
fitness related products and services花费少does not necessarily result in less physical fitness
5.

6.
经济和身体健康没有直接关系,即使经济好了健康不一定好
Grounding on the fact that regions
with the highest
fitness levels has the highest computer ownership, along with the low expenditures on fitness-related products and services, the author accordingly concludes that
less physical fitness is not result from using computers , but from the decline in the economy. After scrutiny the logics of this argument, However, I find it ill-conceived in the following main aspects.
To begin with, through making a comparison in terms of amount of people meeting standards for fitness between the two decades, the author tried to find the reasons for the decline in health standards. Yet, we are not informed whether the recent standards have changed with two decades ago. If more severe disciplines added to it, even though the fitness improved a lot than before, it is unfair to get any conclusion whatsoever.
Secondly, the information about health conditions in Corpora is inadequate. It is entirely possible that the average physical standards decrease dramatically after the widely use of computers, although Corpora is a region with the highest fitness levels. Moreover, the highest levels of computer ownership do not indicate that residents in Corpora often use computers, let alone spend too much time on them. Perhaps residents whose jobs might scarcely deal with computers are wealthier to own kinds of electrical products. Whereas conditions might be opposite in other areas. Without ruling out this alternative explanation to substantiate the relationship between computer usages and fitness level, I cannot accept the conclusion that computers have not made citizens less physically fit.
Assuming the computers have negligible impacts on health, the declining fitness levels is not necessarily due to low expenditures on fitness-related products and services. In fact, this phenomenon would be the indication that less people pay special attention to health care. Perhaps it is unhealthy eating habits, fewer aerobic exercises, higher working pressures that lead to health problems .Or perhaps people suffer a lot from the evolving and wide-spread of epidemics, which change the objective of expenditures as
well as fitness levels.
Finally, the low expenditures might have nothing to do with the recent decline in the economy, as the reason mentioned above. Even if economy improves dramatically, people are not necessarily inclined to purchase fitness-related products and services. Thus it is presumptuous to predict the health levels whatsoever.
In sum, the argument relies on certain problematic assumptions which render it unconvincing as it stands. In order to draw a better conclusion, the author should provide more statistics about health conditions in Corpora, cite some evidences to prove the fitness-related products contribute to the declining fitness levels and so on . |
