Whether should send college and university faculty to work outside the academic world in professions associated with their teaching field? In response to this issue, we need to analyse the proposition comprehensively from a dialetic perspective. The author declares that all faculty should spend time working outside the academic world in professions associate field, however it over simplifies this issue. The final judgement of in my point of view should depend on a case by case analysis.
First and foremost, at the risk sounding too simplistic my point of view for faculty's working outside the academic world, can be summarized in one saying that working outside academic world can bring about a lot of profits. The practical work will may inform the faculty with new technologies and theories which can be used into the courses they teach. For example, in the computer science field, the technology of CPU develops in a rapid speed, the concept of a good software have changed from less computing times into clear and simple structure of codes. If students still learn it in an old concept, there is no doubt that they will meet a lot of troubles when they come into the profession. Another obvious advantage for attending job out of the academic world is that practical job will allow the faculty acquire a practical view on the courses instructed by them, and the konwledge introducted on the courses will be more useful and practical. Moreover addition job may provide the faculty more salary and opportunity.
From a analytical perspective, another essential factors must be concerned is that different fields have different features, the recommendation is only applicable for some parts of faculty in some practical regions, such as math, economic and arts, which can be used in some specific fields, such as calculating, business and painting. However there are some fields such as philosophy and history, are strongly theoretical . The faculty in those fields could hardly find an job out of academic world. In addition, even in practical field, not all faculty are proper to have an additional job. Because some some faculty are too old or too weak to take an outside academic world profession, especially for some profession which need a high strengh phycial work that they could not be competent for.
However we should concede that despite the merits mentioned above, over extended concerning on the outside academic world profession will be indeed harmfu. The harm it produce in my point of view may be both palpable and profound. One problem is that the faculty may spend too much time on outside academic world profession to spare enough time to prepare their courses, and even quite academica instructions and devote themselves into outside academic professions. Another problem is that the outside academic profession may make the faculty lean too much to instructing practical knowledge, however college education is different from profession education. It is necessary to teach students sufficient theories to ensure that the college students are able to acquire a higher education.
From the analysis made above,I strongly commit to the notion that the faculty in specific fields and having enough vigor, should take a additional work out of academic world, and dividing the working time reasonably. |
