TOPIC: ISSUE152 - "The only responsibility of corporate executives, provided they stay within the law, is to make as much money as possible for their companies."
WORDS: 404          TIME: 00:45:00          DATE: 2010-2-16 11:53:09

In a capitalism society, the most important goal of a corporation is for profit. As corporate executives, provided they stay within the law, should make this their top priority over all other responsibilities. On the other side, corporations should also assume social responsibilities which aims to improve the society as a whole and to bring people a bright future and a harmonious world.

Maximizing profit is a foundemental belief of capitalism, and therefore is the center of almost all all business activities. Such activities as investments, innovations, marketing decisions are all profit-driven. As corporate executives, they should be held accountable for stakeholders interests and assure the most return to investors. Without taking the goal of making money as their first priority, executives are putting not only the careers of themselves, but also the development of the whole corporation at the stake. Companies usually have large operating costs, various investments in human capital and manufacturing factories, the more revenues they gain, the more resources they can invest for future development. Companies without good finacial performance are difficult to survive and prosper for a long time.

However, executives should not neglect the fact that corporations, while they are making as money as possible, also have social responsibilities. Many people argue that the ultimate purpose of economic activities is for the human well-being. Therefore, corporate executives should be aware of their obligations for the society, and take efforts in benefiting cosumers, communities, enviroments, and the world as a whole. Executives who failed to assume such responsibilities tend to make profit at the cost of causing enviromental problems. Considering oil and chemical companies, which produce toxic materials and dump them to the outside enviorment. Such actions often result to detrimental consequences to people's health; the Hg disease in Japanes in late 1980's is an evidence. High fat food from Mcdonald and poisionous paintings from toy gaint Mallete are other examples that companies which do not assume enough responsibilities for their business practices. Such practices far too often ruin in hours the company reputations which have been built for decades.

Besides making money and social responsibilites, coporate executives should also consider their people, which are the most valuable asset of a company. If employees can have good health, life-work balance, and happy families, their productivity and loyalty will be significantly improved. Such coperate cultures will inspire people to contribute, stress company solidity and promote success in the long run.
