8. The following appeared in a memorandum issued by the strategic planning department at Omni Inc.公司
"Mesa Foods, a manufacturer of snack foods that currently markets(V.在市场卖东西) its products within a relatively small region of the country, has strong growth potential. Mesa enjoyed a 20 percent increase in profits last year, and its best-selling product, Diabolique Salsa, has had increased sales over each of the past three years. Since Omni Inc. is interested in reaching 14-to-25 year olds, the age group that consumes the most snack food, we should buy Mesa Foods, and concentrate in particular on marketing Diabolique Salsa throughout the country."

The memo issued by the Omni INC. claims that they should buy Mesa Foods for its potential profits. It lies on several assumptions, involving Mesa Foods has strong growth potential throughout the country because its success in a relatively small region of the country, Mesa Foods will be profitable because of its privious increasement in profit and the two company are interested by same age group. However these assumptions are not convincing for its unsubstantiated recommendation.
First of all, the memo indicates that Mesa Foods snack foods will be profitable throughout the country. This argument merely rests on the assumption that the snack foods of Mesa Foods has strong growth potential within a relatively small region of the country. Yet, we are not imformed that the rest of country's population whether will enjoy this kind of snack foods. Besides, its best-selling product Diabolique Salsa maybe merely acceptable by the local people. If this is the case, the recommended aquisition would not serve Omni INC.
Secondly, the memo indicates that Mesa Foods has strong growth potential. This argument lies on the imformations that Mesa enjoyed a 20 percent increase in profits last year, and Diabolique Salsa has had increased sales over each of the past three years. However, we are not imformed that the reason of the increase. It is entirely possible that the snack food is a totally new thing in this area and there is no other competes there, so we can not make sure whether the company could make profit in the future for the changes of apitite of local residences and participation of new competes. If this is the case, the potencial growth will not so sure.
Finally, even if the memo's author can provide evidences to substanciate the foregoing assumptions, the author overlooks that the comsumer groups of two company may be different from each other. It is entirely possible that the snack foods of Mesa Foods is interested in reaching old age group, especially for its best-selling product, Diabolique Salsa. If this is the case, we can not make sure that the Mesa Foods is suitable for Omni INC. to aquisite.
In conclusion, the recommendations are not well surpported. To better evaluate the recommendations, I would need more informations about the apetite of the region whether is as same as the rest of the country, does it need any change, consumer and competes details. |
