TOPIC: ARGUMENT155 - The following appeared in a letter to the editor of a local newspaper.
"Too much emphasis is placed on the development of reading skills in elementary school. Many students who are discouraged by the lonely activity of reading turn away from schoolwork merely because they are poor readers. But books recorded on audiocassette tape provide an important alternative for students at this crucial stage in their education, one the school board should not reject merely because of the expense involved. After all, many studies attest to the value of allowing students to hear books read aloud; there is even evidence that students whose parents read to them are even more likely to become able readers. Thus, hearing books on tape can only make students more eager to read and to learn. Therefore, the school board should encourage schools to buy books on tape and to use them in elementary education."
The editorial recommends that schools should buy books on tape and use them in elementary education, and to support that the author cites studies showing the importance of reading and listening to others, and that hearing books on tape will make the students more eager to ead and learn. However, this argument is problematic in several respects and therefore unconvincing.
First, the argument relies on the assumption that the students' turning away from schoolwork is due to that they are poor readers .But the author does not provide any evidence to prove this assumption. Therefore ,it is entirely possible that other factors are responsible for their poor performance in schoolwork, for instance, their insufficient interest in what they study. So without ruling out other possible explanations for the students'turning away from schoolwork, the argument cannot prove that the recommended books on tape are effective in helping students to improve their reading skills or cultivate their reading eagerness.
Secondly, even if the students' turning away from schoolwork is due to their poor reading skills ,the study showing that students whose parents read to them are more likely to be able readers is not necessarily reliable .The author does not provide the stuties' size of sample or date the studies were conducted on,so any conclusions from the studies are not convincing.Even if the studies were statistically reliable and can reflect the fact, the author hastily conclude that the books on tape can receive the similar effect as by the style of parents'reading, while the argument provides no evidence that the two ways of improving reading skills are comparable in any respect.
Finally, the argument concludes that hearing books on tape can only make student more eager to read and to learn ,which is questionable. The author shows nothing to prove hearing books on tape can do some help to the eagerness of students.Common sense tells me that the style of reading has limitted relationship with the motivation of people's reading, and the later depends more on the content in reading itself. If students are fed up with what they learn in school books, their motivation cannot be stimulated by any form of reading ,including hearing books on tape.
In sum, this argument is unpersuasive .The author unreasonably assumes that the students' performance in schoolwork is directly relevant to their poor reading skills, and that recommended style of reading will surely receive similar results as some studies showed, while providing no evidence that the two different types of reading have comparable function. Moreover, theconclusion that hearing books on tape can improve students' motivation in reading and learning is also of no evidence. To better assess the argument ,I need more information about the studies mentioned and its prerequisite. And I would need to know whether students can receive the similar effects as by hearing parents' reading. Finally, the fact that whether the forms of reading affect the students' motivation in reading and learning also helps evaluate the argument.
