When it comes to the word "tradition", what will hit in your mind? Old, out-fashioned, ancient, or non-useful? I think it is just some narrow aspects of tradition, while it is harmonious with modernization as well as has a close link to modernization, as I will discuss below.
Tradition, broadly speaking, is made up of the social customs and ceremony, the long-standing culture, and the ideas or technology which is relatively static. Just take the traditional festival as a good example. In Western countries, people celebrate Christmas Day to commemorate Jesus Christ. On December 25, people always pour into the mall and supermarket to buy gifts, foods, drinks, and decorate their homes with ribbons and Christmas trees. When the children go to bed, they put a sock on the bed, so that the Saint Claus can put the special presents in it. It cannot be denied that this traditional festival passes on from generation to generation, and will last forever. Why? Because it is related to the culture core and religion of the western world, the building blocks of the society. With this and that tradition, the country can have a solid basis to build the skyscraper, for the people have their beliefs and they can rest their inner world on the religion, which will do the country a lot good.
While refers to modernization, we always define it the process of being more and more advanced. Modernization can be found hither and thither, like the computers at home, the highways outside, the satellites in the universe, and so forth. Certainly, the modernization is benefit to our daily life. The computer and Internet make our world smaller and smaller, and it is convenient to search for the information you need or talk to someone who lives thousands miles away from you. And the highway can reduce the traffic jams and makes your journey more enjoyable and less troublesome. As to the satellites, they make the telecommunication possible, so we can just move our thumbs to send short messages to keep in touch with our friends, no matter when and where. To some extend, we can jump to the conclusion that the modernization enrich our material world.
Thus, tradition can be the harbor where our spirit world can have a rest, while the modernization can give us convenience to make our life cozier. Does the relationship between tradition and modernization incompatible as the issue assert? I don't think so. They are related to each other and, what's more, they are harmonious with each other. In particular, our society makes progress with the increasing economy, advanced technology and, the most important, a sustainable environment and harmonious earth. Only if the human beings are basically moral, will the countries and even the whole world become a better place. Tradition and modernization need to cooperate to accomplish this task.
In the end, what we need is not to make a choice between tradition and modernization, what we need is to combine both of them, making a balance, to build the whole world a harmonious place. |
