The speaker asserts that it is an illusion that people living in one period of time are significantly different from people living at any other time in history, while the study of history will break down the illusion as the chief benefit of itself. I firstly disagree with the assertion of illusion, and more importantly, the chief benefit of the study of history lies in the fact that it provides us with a more comprehensive and insightful perception towards the society and individuals living in thereof.
Admittedly, most of us share a belief that the human nature tends to change little since the ancestors of mankind had begun the social life. In most times, we are greed, prone to jealous and indulged to convenient lives. Hence, the evil of war, poverty and crime have accompanied us since then. However, with the development of science and technology, the productivity of human being has improved in thousands times, the public has become more enlightened than ever before. Consequently, although the persistent problems of human society still hover over, we had treated them differently and more appropriately. In ancient times, there were slaves of war; now they are treated with more humanity. The points I want to stress is that the productivity of mankind and the accompanying universal ideas such as equality of men and women, freedom of speech have and will continue to exert more and more positive influence on the people and their behavior, thus making a more promising future for both mankind and the ecosystem to live with each other.
Meanwhile, I think the chief benefit of the study of history is that it serves as a mirror in which we can observe the evolution of human society, reflect the behaviors of mankind and therefore improve the well-being of each individual. The study of history can, to a considerable extent, satisfy the inherent curiosity of mankind towards the eternal questions such as where the human originates, what they have done before and how the social customs and ethics come into being as it does today. It is not only significantly beneficial to individuals who are not content with the present, but also equip us with insightful wisdom on which the conflicts could be relied to solve. Hence, in certain terms history defines the human beings and the study of history is an integral part of self-knowledge.
In the final analysis, the speaker understates the significance of history studying. Although some nature of human beings will perpetuate, people can redefine the behavior codes and consequently transform the society into a more civilized one where each individual can expect a better life.
