After analyzing the statement, three questions come into my mind. First, what’s the reason leading to otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society if not revealed through arts? Second, why arts are chose as the representative to reveal these ideas and impulses? Third, how can arts promise to serve this purpose? Fortunately, I have got the all these answers and I totally agree with the statement.

To begin with, from my viewpoint, hidden ideas and impulses of a society mainly result from three reasons: absence of democracy, being too abstract to reveal by other means and not being able to be accepted by people of the same era. Obviously, a society governed by a dictator cannot bear any negative ideas or impulses to exist ostensibly, and thus people would prefer to turn to arts for help and convert their ideas and impulses into the artistic works. Meanwhile, ideas and impulse being too abstract usually cannot find out other better path than arts to reveal. When it comes to not being accepted, arts also promise to be the only way to accomplish the task.

As for why arts are chose as the medium to reveal those ideas and impulses, in my opinion, there are two main reasons. First, since arts are mostly personal spiritual results without interfering or assisting by other externally influential factors, so artists can fully and freely convert ideas or impulses into their work. By contrast, other methods are hardly characterized with such features. Second, arts, being the medium of preserving spirits, must rely on some concrete objects, such as story, fiction, poems, and so forth, which actually serve as a protection of artists sometimes. Hence, considering these advantages of revealing ideas and impulses by arts, it would be not difficult to understand the reason why arts are chose rather than other methods.

Then, how can arts promise to reveal those hidden ideas and impulses? Take examples to illustrate. Consider Journey to the West, one of the Four Great classical Chinese novels, the author reflected the political corruption and people’s desire for freedom and justice felicitously by shaping four interesting figures. Jules-Verne, French science fiction writer, described his fascinating ideas about the future, which were too abstract to reveal by other means considering the real social technology level. Besides, Confucius, the greatest thinker in Chinese history, had no choice but to record his thoughts of governing without doing anything against nature into books to pass down, since no emperors accepted his suggestions. Therefore, arts actually can serve as the optimal medium of revealing ideas and impulses

To summarize, considering the reason leading to otherwise hidden ideas and impulses, and the characteristics of revealing by arts, I agree that arts have been the path to reveal otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society.
