Admittedly, I agree with the statement insofar as advanced technologies nowadays certainly have imposed significant influence on social customs and ethics, and even changed them gradually from my viewpoint. That’s not to say, however, technologies can determine social customs and ethics.

To begin with, on the one side, we have got to acknowledge that technologies can influence our customs definitely. As we all know, our comfortable and convenient daily life nowadays characterized with customs quite different from past mainly result from the advances in technologies. For examples, rapid development in communication has changed the way we communicate completely; researches on health help people to develop new scientific diet; computer technologies open a whole new world for us and has brought about enormous changes to our human beings. All these earth-shaking changes in our living habits and customs come from the advances in technologies doubtlessly, and never have we our human beings gone through such earth-quaking changes before.

On the other side, there is no denying that technologies nowadays have imposed irrevocable effects on our ethics. As for the positive effects, the ethic advocated by society nowadays can be propagated widely by advanced Internet technology, and to some extent has enhanced the morality level of common people. As for the negative influence, vast amount of unhealthy information on the Internet, like pornographic information and money worship, has brought harmful influence on children’s mind. Accordingly, technologies can influence our original ethics, on both positive and negative.

Albeit the forgoing discussion about technologies can impose powerful influence son our social customs and ethics; however, I disagree technologies can determine them. From my viewpoint, social customs and ethics are products of our human nature or spiritual conventions, which belong to spiritual domain. By contrast, technologies just serve as tools for human beings to reform the world, which without emotion and are controlled by us. Logically speaking, technologies cannot determine our social customs and ethics. A case to this point is the research on massive destructive weapons has been banned by formal decree in all the countries, because it contradicts our ethics. Another example is the Chinese custom, eating dumplings on the Spring Festival Day, has been continuing for more than one thousand years rather than determined by technologies.

Furthermore, as has been stated above, the influence of technologies can be both positive and negative. Obviously, we need to promote and advocate those positive effects and prevent those negative ones from bringing out bad results for the purpose of developing our customs and ethics healthily, like advocating people to take health eating habits and providing teenagers with a better Internet atmosphere.

To summarize, I concede the significant effects imposed on our social customs and ethics by technologies. Notwithstanding, we have to realize the fact that technologies, tools for us to reform the world, can never determine our social customs and ethics.
