99. In any realm of life--whether academic, social, business, or political-- the only way to succeed is to take a practical, rather than an idealistic, point of view. Pragmatic behavior guarantees survival, whereas idealistic views tend to be superceded by simpler, more immediate options.
Is the only way to achieve success is to take a practical view rather than an idealistic one, as the speaker maintains? Though the speaker may be somewhat arbitrary, I agree that while idealistic is required, practicality is of great significance to today's society.
Admittedly, the idealistic ideas, to some extent, help people to direct a clear goal. An individual cannot wander in the path of life unless he or she has prepared to lead a almost unknown life. With an appropriate plan, even just an original plan, one can set out his or her own journey to explore and gain.
However, in some cases, idealism tends to be replaced by practicality. With the rapid development of the society, excess idealistic ideas stands in one's way to keep the pace of contemporary. Though idealism and practicality mutually pave one's way to success, under certain circumstances, practicality is rather vital. Claude Monet, the founder of Impressionism who had a vital influence on the artists who live after him, was not appreciated by the contemporaries, for the paintings he worked out were somewhat out of the acceptability of the time. Though he owned nice dreams about his future and his painstaking efforts, the poverty and hunger was rounded him. In order to survive, he had to sell his works out in a great bargain and created paintings that the contemporaries appreciated, regardless of his own preference. The example illustrates that no matter how unique, or bigness one's dreams are, these idealistic ideas is merely nothing when confronted with people's basic needs, and today, the sense of self-respect. It is not the person himself makes the choice but the time of society and one's social position that determine whether one qualifies an idealistic way.
In fact, under a majority of circumstances, it is the pragmatic ideas that guarantee one's survival, on which success bases. It is hard to judge success, for different people hold different definitions of it; however, the basic needs of one's living are the essential problem that one has to face. Only thinking with no action, it is merely impossible to do anything, not mention contributions to society. Further, as an old saying goes (and I paraphrase):"Life consists of many life fragments, and what one need to do is put them together." It demonstrates that even if one is capable of attaining success, he or she has to go head step by step; in other words, there is almost no possibility to gain success through only one step, unless one wins a prize in lottery. However, few people have considered that if one wins the prize, the first step the winner has to do is to afford time to get a ticket, rather than sitting and dreaming about the future and do nothing at all-- the extreme performance of idealism.
Simply put, without idealism it is hard to define one's ultimate goals; however, without practicality it is unrealistic to realize the dream, which requires for a "step by step" spirit. Thus, for both of them are essential, to accomplish temporary tasks, practicality is needed. |
