题目:ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
Is it the artist, not the critic, who gives society something of lasting value, as the speaker maintains? I concede that the artists' works represents the value of our society to some extent. However, we should not overlook the vital role that the critics play in forming the society's value.
Admittedly, it is the artist's creative work that provides us with masterpieces that characterize our society and enrich our spiritual life. The great beauty in life needs the excellence of artists to discover and express, in the form of magnificent and immortal artworks. Consider, for instance, Luxun, one of the greatest revolutionary soldiers of proletariat in China and litterateur, his work such as "A Madman's Diary " which revealed the darkness of the society and the political situation in old china greatly shocked the ruling classes in that time. Luxun ultimately woke up billions of compatriots to fight for freedom and liberty with his masterpieces, to some extent, he influenced the course of Chinese history.
However, the functions of the art critic can not be overlooked. First, consider, critics can help us understand and interpret art; a critic who is familiar with a particular artist and his or her works might have certain insights about those works that the layperson would not. A critic 's evaluation of an art work serves as a filter, which helps us determine which art is worth our attention and time. For example, a new novel by a best-seling author might nevertheless be an uninspired effort , and if the critic can call our attention to this fact we gain time to seek out more wothwhile literature to read.
Moreover, a critic can provide feedback for artists; and constructive criticism, if taken to heart, can result in better work. Any informed person would agree that although art is the product of the artist'sauthentic passion, and a manifestation of the artist's unique creative impulse, the artist should also take others' advices into consideration. As far as I concerned, only that shaped by the concern for intergrating feedback from all criticism can really become a art. Conversly, work that just mirrow the artist's spirit might be just regarded as a craft, not a art, or it may lead to such absurd phenomenon that all people who create objectives which reflect the creator's spirit and passion could be regarded as artists. How ridiculous it sounds!
In sum, both the artist and the critic contribute in giving the society something of lasting value, they depend on each other. We should be inclined to neither. It is just under the interaction of artist and critic that we human species build our core value about arts. |
