ARGUMENT8 - The following appeared in a memorandum issued by the strategic planning department at Omni Inc.
"Mesa Foods, a manufacturer of snack foods that currently markets its products within a relatively small region of the country, has strong growth potential. Mesa enjoyed a 20 percent increase in profits last year, and its best-selling product, Diabolique Salsa, has had increased sales over each of the past three years. Since Omni Inc. is interested in reaching 14-to-25 year olds, the age group that consumes the most snack food, we should buy Mesa Foods, and concentrate in particular on marketing Diabolique Salsa throughout the country."
The Omni Inc memorandum claims that Omni should buy Mesa Foods ,and aggressively promote its brand of salsa in the country. To substantiate the recommendation the aurger notes that in the past 3 years Diabolique Salsa has increasing sales , and the profits has a 20 percent increase last year. The argument is logically flawed in the following 3 respects.
First of all, the 20 percent increase in profits last year does not necessarily indicate that Omni could benefit form this trade. It is entirely possible that in most other years Mesa was not profitable. And , the 20% increase might has been due to the profits from its best-selling product, Diabolique Salsa, and earing little profits from other products, which may meet 14-25 year olds. If this is the case ,the Omni is unlikely to profit from the recommended course of action.
Secondly, the argument depends on assumption that Mesa' snack foods appeal to 14-25 year olds, which is interested by Omni. However, the auguer provides no credible evidence that what types of snack foods Mesa manufactures, aside form its Diabolique Salsa. It is entirely possible that most of its snack foods ,including its salsa, appeal to other age olds. Without eliminating a host of other possible explanations, the arguer can not convince me that this action would serve Omni's goal.
Finally, even if the arguer can substantiate the foregoing assumptions, the auguer assumes what is profitable in a relatively small region is certainly profitable all over the country. Perhaps only residents in this special region like the snack foods making by Mesa, it is entirely possible that Omni would not sell enough Mesa snack foods all over the country, including its salsa, to earn the profit from its Mesa operation. Without better evidence that Mesa foods would be popular nationwide, the meno remains unpersuasive.
In conclusion, the arguer can not justify the recommendation on the basis of the scant evidence provided in the memo. To substantiate the recommendation the augrer must provide information about Mesa's profitability over a longer period. To better evaluate the recommendation, i would also need evidence that Mesa's snack foods ,specially its salsa, would appeal to 14-25 year olds throughout the country.
