For most of the effective leaders, they gain the acclaim not only for what their deeds for whom they serve, but also their highly morality. To be an effective official,
it is necessary for one to adhere to the ethical standards;at the same time, one has to develop an appropriate judgment to obey such moral standards.
To begin with, we have to figure out the effectiveness of a leader. An effective leader can be defined in several prospective in a democratic society. A public official is primarily working for the people, thus he or she has to inspect the problems and change of the society as soon as possible, then work out the policy or take measures to cope with them. The most important part is that the effort of the official should be proved in the practice an efficient and beneficial one, preventing the worse and doing goodness for the sake of the people. We can say the Roosevelt is such a effective leader, who worked measurements in a right direction to keep America from recession and cooperate with the Giants, succeeded in the World War II, protected his people from falling into poverty and warfare.
In this definition of effective leader, the necessity to maintain the ethical and moral standards for a public official is obvious to be seen. For most of nations, the ethical and moral standards are established for a long time and are going along with the principles of rightness. For example, in the Chinese moral and ethical system, the individual has the duty to take responsible with him, the family and the nation. Thus, if one is chosen to be the leader, he has to sacrifice himself to his duty, take responsible for the community and doing what he can to protect and benefit his people. In this aspect, ethical and moral standards will supervise the official adhere to his duty and do goodness to who he serves.
However, the official also needs to develop his own ideas to maintain the moral standards, especially the highest ones. Here, we take the highest standard as to stick to the morality strictly. An official or a leader is elected to organize the nation united in a better sense in a democratic society. But for most moral principles, they are too idealized to construct the society and require the people, that we shouldn't follow them in the developing modern world. In the original tradition in the U.S.A. the puritan are strict to work hard and live a regular and abstemious life. What if the leaders maintain such standard and govern the public, the society will be strict and simple without the colorful entertainment. While in China, the sacrifice and devotion is an important part of the morality. The overly emphasis on maintaining such standards will lead the tragedy for the leaderships. Therefore, a public official had better maintain the moral standard in a proper extent with a reasonable judgment.
In conclusion, an effective leader in a democratic nation is primarily presented in the aspect of serving its people with efficient measure, and to stick to the ethical and moral standards is necessary to achieve that as long as the official makes a good judgment to the "highest". |
