Argument No.037
Woven baskets characterized by a particular distinctive pattern have previously been found only in the immediate vicinity of the prehistoric village of Palea and therefore were believed to have been unique to the Palean people. Recently, however, archaeologists discovered such a "Palean" basket in Lithos, an ancient village across the Brim River from Palea. The Brim River is very deep and broad, and so the ancient Paleans could only have crossed it by boat, but there is no evidence that the Paleans had boats. And boats capable of carrying groups of people and cargo were not developed until thousands of years after the Palean people disappeared. Moreover, Paleans would have had no need to cross the river—the woods around Palea are full of nuts, berries, and small game. It follows that the so-called Palean baskets were not unique to Palea.
1.
地壳的变动,可能那时不深
2. 即使水很深,why boat? 其他方法,水陆,龙卷风,还有可能也是地壳,就过去了
3. cross river 并不是非要为了生存,其他目的也可以啊。还可能后人那过去的
There is a new discovery that the so called “Palean” basket was found at other village across the Brim River from Palea. Based on this discovery, the author claims three reasons and obtains a result that the Palean baskets are not unique to Palea. Careful examination of the analysis, however, reveals several logic flaws that may not be persuasive as it stands.
First of all, the author says that the Brim River is very deep and broad now and people then were not able to cross it. However, it relies actually an unsubstantiated assumption that the river was the same as the current one. As we all known that crustal movement always happens during the development of the earth. Perhaps there was no river at all at that time, so how could the author judge that ancient couldn’t reach Lithos.
In addition, even assuming the Brim River existed anciently and it was deep and broad as author’s assertion, we could still infer the conclusion author has got. There were other possibilities that the Palean basket could be found in Lithos. To explain, we may ask the following questions. Why the baskets should be taken by boat and by humans? Perhaps, the baskets flew on the river and powered by winds so that they reached Lithos. In addition, maybe there happened a tornado which blew the baskets to Lithos through air unluckily. Or even by the same reason of crustal movement, the baskets were transferred to Lithos inside the soil. Before enough evidence provided, author cannot make such an absolute conclusion.
Finally, the fact that there were lots of sources around Palea could support the conclusion author’s made. Admittedly, ancient people did not need to go to Lithos for living. However, it might be their customs that sending baskets there would bring lucks for themselves. Furthermore, the baskets may be brought by their generations after they had disappeared, or their generations had migrated to Lithos. Author commits a fallacy of hasty generalization without more deep archaeological discoveries are provided.
In summary, to persuade me that the so-called Palean baskets were not unique to Palea must supply more clear evidence in terms of archeology, geology and literature. Otherwise, it appears ridiculous and implausible to assert that the Palean baskets were not unique to Palea.
