"Imaginative works such as novels, plays, films, fairy tales, and legends present a more
accurate and meaningful picture of human experience than do factual accounts. Because the
creators of fiction shape and focus reality rather than report on it literally, their creations have a
more lasting significance."
15:35~16:21
Do imaginative works have a more lasting significance compared with factual accounts, since they shape and focus reality rather than report literally? The speaker's answer seems to overestimate the significance of imaginative works to some extent. However, I fundamentally agree with the claim. Although imaginative works may be blamed for losing objectivity to some extent, it does present social life and human experience lively and therefore have a lasting significance.
It is true that factual accounts can record history more precisely and objectively. Thus, they can provide real backgrounds for individuals who would like to take history as reference. For example, the politicians can analyze the effects of a certain policy; the educators can learn some effective teaching methods from the past; the writers can compose historical novel in certain history background; and the film makers can choose proper costumes for story happened in certain time. It is the factual works describing history and human experience without any prejudice that we human beings can easily identify who we are and what we can do.
However, factual works is also limited to its objective principle. They can only give us a scheme of the people's life in the past, leaving us unknown about the ideas and spirits of that time. Luckily, these can be found in { supplemented by }imaginative works such as novels and films, or even fairy tales and legends. Unlike factual works, imaginative works focus more on people's insides, which reflects people's feelings and wills, and the spirits that drove them to strike for a better life. Even the time is changing and the social environment keeps advancing, we can still understand those inner feelings and be encouraged by those spirits. This can not be reached merely through factual accounts, which treat such psychological facts as subjective.
For example, the famous fictional film, ET, reflects human's desire to understand the outer space around us, which still remains a mystery and is being explored. Even if we have not yet found creatures from outer space like ET in the film, we can still understand various feelings of the people of that time: they are curious about strange things; some of them tends to show love to anyone who needs help while the other simply act as xenophobia, which is an accurate description of the society. Compared with a skeleton of history, such imaginative works put us in a concrete human world full of sentiment and provide more enlightening meaning of life. Therefore, they deserve a more lasting significance.
In sum, the drawback of imaginative works like(such as) lacking objectivity can not cover their great value in presenting a more accurate and meaningful(imaginative fable and film也是有意义的 感觉meaningful不能区分 factual 和imaginative -----鸡蛋里挑骨头了 呵呵) picture of human experience. Some of them may base on factual works, however, it is the idea and sentiment inside that gives them lasting significance.
感觉整篇写的很顺利,还是感觉和以前的问题一样,分析力度不是很强,4.5
