Art is the thing for us to appreciate. But is it the artist rather than the critic that leaves the lasting value to the society, as the speaker asserts? In my opinion, I agree with the speaker insofar that the masterpieces we admire most are truly made by the artist. However, to give something of lasting value to the society, the critic is also indispensible.
Admittedly, the masterpieces which the public are in favor of are the inspirations of the artists. Critics can never have that capability. As the profound painting Mona Lisa made by the great artist Da Vinci , The mysterious smile worn on her face have absorbed numerous people's praise and researches aiming at disclosing the mystery. Also the Symphony of Fate composed by the famous artist Beethoven, have aroused people's resonance who are in trouble or trapped in the lowest point of their lifetime. This music not only gives us the beauty in listening but also the strength in fighting against difficulties and unfairness. The lasting value that benefits the world is without doubt initially created by the artists.
Artists made the works; however, the critic is the type of persons that bridge the artists and the ordinary public which are limited in the skills of appreciation. As in most cases, the public are unable to accurately and thoroughly understand the connotation and the inner soul of the masterpieces of the artists. After all, plenty of artists manifest their ideals implicitly. Limited by our defect in appreciation, we need the critic to interpret and point out where the miracles of the works are. Profound as the masterpieces are, they also require people to understand, or they cannot be regarded as lasting value. To a great extent, Critics can be indispensible as artists need people to convey their inner hearts.
Last but not least, there is no denying that the critic may sometimes have errors in judging the value of certain works which is influenced by various kinds of factors. Confined by their limitation in understand and the differences in their experience of the past. Critics more or less make their judgment according to the subjective ideals of their own. One apt illustration involves Van Gogh, one of the greatest painters of impressionism across the world. In his ages, no critic gave right judgment of his masterpieces as his style was not fit in with the era then. Another great painter involves the example of Jan Vermeer. In retrospect, Jan Vermeer, a Dutch Baroque painter who seems to have left no legacy but debt to his family. Because the idiom of luxury is prevailed in his era, while he specialized in exquisite, domestic interior scenes of middle class life, he has never considered selling one of his paintings during his lifetime. But he clang tenaciously to creating a perfect world of his own and delivering the eternal theme: Love. Fortunately, evolving with the time, with changes in critics’ perception, Vermeer's reputation has grown, and his unique appreciation of life is finally understood by the public.
In conclusion, only combined efforts of the artist and the critic together are able to give lasting value to the society. Therefore, the works of great lasting value are those which are created by artists and correctly interpreted as well as evaluated by critics which attract people's attention towards the masterpieces.
