Issue No.43
"To be an effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards."
要想成为一位有成效的领导者,必须有最高的伦理和道德修养。

What is leadership and what makes an effective leader? This kind of questions have been asking and discussing for hundreds of years. The speaker asserts that the ethical and moral standards should be a dispensable trait possessed by effective leader. I fundamentally agree, for an effective should be a virtuous one at most, but to say that it requires the highest ethical and moral standards is an overstatement.

First turning to the political field, it is not hard to find out the ethical and moral requirements are significant to define whether a politician could win a vote or a debate. It is a prerequisite that taken into consideration since a person who are not virtuous must be the one trustless. Take Abraham Lincoln as an example, during his tenure, he dedicated his energy to preserving the union of United States, moreover, he also ended slavery during the Civil War. If he was a person who only cared about what benefits of being a president could bring him, he would not take the risk of fighting against rebel southern states, not even mention setting free the slavery who have nothing to do with his own profit. It contributes to his strong strength and persistence to lead the country to a destination which filled with democratic and equal atmosphere. In other words, his honesty and boldness make him a effective leader not only in the direction of the Civil War, but also in the public minds.

To have high moral standards is also important to become an effective leader in a corporation. A good and effective leader should be just and honest to everyone. Because his followers and staff would deliberate him as a model in their daily life. If the leader fails to keep his own principles and do what tend to be considered wrong, would definitely result in bad influence on his supporters which render his work ineffective. For example, if a leader who betrays his company and sale valuable client information to other companies, once being caught, would not only hurt the benefits of his company, but also make him lose the job. Such a bad moral standard render him a failing leader and a person who is not trustworthy. Only a person who maintains high ethical and moral standards could win the support of his partner and employees, as a consequence, forming a harmonious atmosphere and an effective working environment.

Though it is true that a leader with high ethical and moral standards would promote a person to be an effective leader, I maintain sometimes it does not need to require a highest ethical and moral standards. First of all, no one could be a perfect person for he/she must has some blemishes. Take  Bill Clinton as a typical example. He was accused of various sexual affairs and once impeached for obstruction of justice, but the longest period of economic expansion after the Second World War testifies his effective leadership. Another political scandal such as Watergate Scandal which ultimately led to the resignation of the United States President Richard Nixon. But we cannot deny the fact that he is also an effective leader for he has made a contribution to the diplomatic affairs such as making a diplomatic relation with China.

To sum up, although high moral and ethical standards will help a person to some extent, it is also important not to request strictly every leader for they could make some moral mistakes which may not conflict with their effective leadership.

What is leadership and what makes an effective leader? This kind of questions have been asking and discussing for hundreds of years. The speaker asserts that the ethical and moral standards should be a dispensable trait possessed by effective leader. I fundamentally agree, for an effective should be a virtuous one at most (去掉FOR, 否则没有助于了), but to say that it requires the highest ethical and moral standards is an overstatement.

First turning to the political field, it is not hard to find out the ethical and moral requirements that are significant to define whether a politician could win a vote or a debate. (这句看不太懂哦,语法有问题咯) It is a prerequisite that taken into consideration since a person who are not virtuous must be the one trustless. Take Abraham Lincoln as an example, during his tenure, he dedicated his energy to preserving the union of United States, moreover, he also ended slavery during the Civil War. If he was a person who only cared about what benefits of being a president could bring to him, he would not take the risk of fighting against rebel southern states, not even mention setting free the slavery who have had nothing to do with his own profit. It contributes to his strong strength and persistence to that leads the country to a destination which is filled with democratic and equal atmosphere. In other words, his honesty and boldness make him a effective leader not only in the direction (这个词感觉怪怪的) of the Civil War, but also in the public minds.

To have (Having吧,) high moral standards is also important to become an effective leader in a corporation. A good and effective leader should be just and honest to everyone. Because his followers and staff would deliberate him as a model in their daily life. If the leader fails to keep his own principles and does what tends to be considered wrong, it (要不然有没有主语啦)would definitely result in bad influence on his supporters which render his work ineffective. For example, if a leader who betrays his company and sales valuable client information to other companies, once being caught, would not only hurt the benefits of his company, but also make him lose the job. (把IF 去了吧,)Such a bad moral standard render him a failing leader and a person who is not trustworthy. Only a person who maintains high ethical and moral standards could win the support of his partner and employees, as a consequence, forming a harmonious atmosphere and an effective working environment. (最后一句不错~) |(有个具体的例子就更好了)

To sum up, although high moral and ethical standards will help a person to some extent, it is also important not to request strictly every leader for they could make some moral mistakes (语法有问题~)which may not conflict with their effective leadership.
