48. "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."

It is well known that the study in history always put significant emphasis on famous individual who influenced and even decided significant events and trends successfully. However, the emphasis placed on outstanding individuals is necessarily and indispensable, but not too much, in my point of view.

Admittedly, groups of commonplace people whose identities have long been forgotten actually make the most significant events and trends in history. For example, in the United States War of Independence, the United States would not successfully defeat British and build a nation without a substantial amount of commonplace individuals taking part in the war for liberty. This illustration points out that most of the significant events and revolutions in history would not happen without groups of commonplace people. In addition, without the students of Plato, the most famous educator and philosopher in Western culture, this culture will not as they are now. Therefore, most significant events and trends in history are made and decided by the groups of commonplace people who joined these events but been forgotten long in fact.

Although the most significant events and trends in history were created by a substantial amount of average people, placing more emphasis on famous individuals who came from and were part of the commonplace people made history in study of history is reasonable, because most significant events and trends in history would not take place successfully without an outstanding leader of groups. For example, just because myriad average people under a fantastic leadership in the United States War of Independence, of George Washington, who leaded troops of the United States to success in the end. So that any effective and benefit outcome would not be achieved without a great leader who can analyze and solve problems insightfully and successfully. But actually he was one of the famous few in history who should be paid more attentions to, because he was not the opposition to his troops who defeat enemies at battlefield, but the most outstanding representative who had leaded troops successfully in fact.

Therefore, studying the famous individuals who leaded and made the significant events and trends in history is better than studying the groups of people who have been long forgotten. For example, if we want to study Western Culture, the works of Plato are the best choose for its comprehensive representativeness involving philosophy, math and science, and so forth. Nevertheless, there are numerous and myriad commonplace people who also are part of the Western Culture, but they cannot be used for this kind of study because of its non-accessibility and non-representative. In addition, most famous few in historic significant events and trends are not contrast to myriad average people who also made these events and trends, but an outstanding leader with better accessibility and representative.

In sum, the emphasis laid on the few outstanding individuals will not be too much, for its better accessibility and representative what numerous commonplace people cannot complete with.
