The best way to teach—whether as an educator, employer, or parent—is to praise positive actions and ignore negative ones.

Along the history of education, we human beings are keeping on searching for effective education methods. Teachers are trying to pursue the best way to teach the students. Employers are looking for proper courses to train the employees. And even parents have never stopped seeking solutions to educate their children best. Fortunately, we have already reached some wide-agreed methods, say, praising positive actions and proper criticizing the negative ones to build a sound value system to enough self confidence.

Praise is the most beautiful language in the world. Students will do better if they are praised by their teachers. Employees will work even harder to achieve the boss's goal after a gracious assessment. Children tend to engage more their time to satisfy their parents when hearing approving words from father and mother. What is the underlying incentive to move them further? The answer lies in the self-confidence built through praising words. Anyone who is praised will certainly find his intelligence and activity is worthwhile and then will confirm his own ability. Meanwhile, he will inevitably build a criterion of what is right and will be appreciated by others. In other word, a suitable value system is being built. This kind of feelings will encourage one to perform better in the near future. That is the magic of praise.

Positive actions deserve praise. However, too much praise but no criticism will ruin one instead. In the single-child family, parents and even grand-parents tend to coddle the child that they never criticize even if negative actions are being done by the child. No doubt, these children would likely to grow into a man with over-confidence that they would be unable to form an accepted value system. That will in turn harm themselves when they enter the society.

Then, what should be done when negative actions are met? In my view, criticism is needed. For example, when a bank clerk malfunction the bank assets to invest in his own stocks, the boss should criticize him in front of all employees in order to let them know this kind of behavior is forbidden and should never happen again. Moreover, the employer should have a private conversation with this employee to know the reason why he embezzled the bank assets. If the clerk really has some difficulty in his life, the employer should offer helpful advice while inform him his duty and rights. Through setting up professional value system, firms can avoid unnecessary loss and create more value for the investors and establish a positive image in the society. The same also applies to students. Teachers should inform them what should not be done before the undesirable outcomes by explain the reason and the result of certain negative actions.

In sum, the essence of education should be to create wide accepted value system among people. Praising positive actions or criticizing negative ones instead of ignoring are only methods through which to obtain the final goal. With enough self-confidence and proper value system, our education can help the society prosper in the end.
