5. summary
When discussing the purpose of education, providing students with a value system while prepare them for jobs are equally important in my view. One reason is that without a proper value system, we can not ensure the society will develop in a right direction. Another reason is that specific knowledge and skills advances too fast to determine what should be taught to prepare well students for a specific job. Moreover, if suitable value system is established among students, it will be helpful for them to succeed in their job career.
In order to define a successful job career, we first need to build an appropriate standard to measure. This is the fundamental function of a value system. Without a correct value system in mind, students are more likely to use the knowledge and skills they learned to do harmful things to the society. Consider the case of clone technology. If the students and researches in this field did not form proper ethnic standard and wrongly applied this technology to forbidden areas, such as cloning people, the whole world would be under threaten of who was the real one. In short, only when educators manage to form a generally accepted value system in their student, the society's prosperity and sustainability can be guaranteed.
Meanwhile, the advancement of specific knowledge and skills is often too fast that made it impossible for education system to cope with. An apt example of college education serves to support this statement. Suppose the college determined the curriculum for its freshmen students of biochemistry four years ago according to the latest job needs in the relevant industries. However, when these students are going to graduate now, the trend has already changed and what they learned during the four years is obsolete. Despite the college's wish to prepare students for a specific job, reality simply proves that this is just in vain. Therefore, educators should keep in mind that only teach students knowledge and skills is not enough to prepare them well in a specific job due to the fast developments made in every fields.
Some people may argue that people can only realize their own value in their work after their graduation from schools. Admittedly, our society can only keep on developing through the individual achievements made in specific job as well. However, we should also realize that the achievements of individuals are more likely to be attained when a proper value system and ethnic standard is established when they were at schools, for they tend to form mutual goals and cooperate equally and openly, which are all included in the scope of value system and ethnic standard. In other words, when students build such value system by virtue of school education, it will certainly prepare them better in the later job careers.
To sum up, lacking correct value system and ethnic standard will cause disasters in both individual level and social level. Since the advancements in specific field are springing out so fast, education should not only focus on teaching students knowledge and skills. Through establishing value system among students, they are more likely to achieve individual goals and mutual goals in society. |
