TOPIC: ISSUE88 - "Technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics."

It is widely concerned that advancements of technologies have great impact on development of society. Some people argue that social features as customs and ethics are not only influenced but also determined by the technologies. From my point of view, in some respects, this argument do have merits, while in other respects they do not.

Progress of technologies is the paramount impetus of social development, which has great impression on people's lives. Modern technologies have made it convinient for living and working and this convinience in turn changes people's customs. The ability of producing food in large amount enables people to buy vegetables in supermarket rather than growing their own. The breakthrough on computer science, especially on network makes telecommute possible and enables us to talk to any one in the world without going out the door. Social customs have been greatly impressed under the development of technologies since technologies gradually change the traditional way of living, instead more convinient ways are proposed. For example, due to the breakthrough on electronical engineering and telecommunication, we are able to correspondent with friends, relatives via telephone, fax, email which are more convinient and efficient than traditional written mails.   

Turing next to the ethics, technologies greatly affect ethics by providing scientific viewpoint on various ethics issue. It is common to marry relatives hundreds years ago, like Darwin who discovered the theory of evolution. Nowadays awaring of the consequences of intermarriage derived from genetic theory, we are not only prohibited but also unwilling to take the risk of generating less-developed kids.

Even technologies posses great effect on social customs and ethics, it is only one of the factors influencing the extent to which social customs and ethics are affected. And as far as I know, this is not even the most important one. For example, people wear different costumes in different festivals arount the world. This is determined by tradition and can not easily been removed by technologies. As we all know, the development of customs and ethics goes consistantly with the history of human developing which also does not rely only on technologies. People's customs and ethics usually are the direct reflection of their current culture, such as art, science, politics. Take the example of Florence in Renaissance, various church, paintings, sculptures have made this city a center of art and their people's appreciation on art. However, these customs are not the results of technologies.

In sum,  technologies have great impact on social customs and ethics but this is neither the only factor nor the decisive one. Stating thechnologies determine social customs and ethics is an unfair generalization.

However, these customs are not the results of technologies.(阐述的很有条理)
