Issue No.88  Technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics.

With modern technology conquering the world, supplying various convenience and comfort, people are increasingly used to the life filled with electric appliances. Indeed, technologies from all aspects, to some extent, influence, or even determine social customs and ethics.

To begin with, with a increasingly quick pace towards advancement, technologies force one forward, in order to reach certain standard of so-called "custom". To save time and travel freely, one purchases a car. To keep pace of time, one buy all kinds of electric facilities, and learn to utilize them every day. To catch up with others, one takes online courses late into night. Undoubtedly, it is industrial modernization, the invisible hand that pushes us to function faultlessly, in fear of leaving behind.

In addition, technologies form most people's lifestyle, no matter whether they accept them or not. Cities grow incredibly large, resulting in innumerable autos running all over, and frequent traffic jam in rush time. Citizens either cram in skyscrapers or move out to countryside. Instead of exchanging smiles, people mostly communicate with MSN or facebook. Sometimes, relations are digital, because mostly, people who tired of commuting just chat online. Basically, people live on technologies.

In some cases, technologies are necessities in presenting ethics, not choices nowadays. For instance, architects must use computer softwares to precisely measure the capability of a building, instead of calculating by them. If doctors can find the answer by examing an X-ray result, they would not judge by guessing. Otherwise, misconducts would cause fatal disasters, which arouse questions around ethics.

Certainly, some old customs remain still. In festivals and ceremonies, little change is applied in order to be novel. People abandon computers, televisions and telephones to conform tradition. Only cameras and video recorder play significant roles outside the scene.

In conclusion, it is technologies that help shape the new customs, change the lifestyle. Relying on technique, there goes ethic judgment, in some realms, while some old customs are kept in festivals and rituals.
