ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.

To seek for the lasting value in art, there always exists a debate of whether it is the artist, or the critic that offers it. Which one I would choose partly depend on what the definition of the lasting value is.

When the lasting value means an ability to provide something for appreciation and understanding later, artists may successfully accomplish the goal, as it is their job to create great works, expressing their emotions and feelings. Painters use colors to convey messages; writers use words to transmit information; composers uses tones to output details. Various forms of art are all media to express the creators' inner world. As long as the works are sold out and kept carefully for long, no matter whether they are fantastic or not, these pieces of works posses lasting value, and the creators realize the value.

On the other hand, if the lasting value is to set standards, guiding others to advance, then the critic certainly finish the job. They study past present artistic works, coming up with certain criteria, which introduce the best to the masses, and new artists. Without the directions they point out, the development of art appreciation would be all too long. So is the development of art.

Finally, considering art is a progress of creating works and guiding others, both the critic and the artist support the development of art. With the assistance and guidance of the critic, carving, writing and playing the instruments would be more efficient and easier. Similarly, with the products and cooperation of the artist, critics in newspapers and magazines would not be bland or lukewarm any more. In short, only with the teamwork of artists and critics, can art reach to a new peak.

In conclusion, with the definition of lasting value varying, whether it is the artist or the critic that creates it differs. Considering the progress of art developing, we may conclude that both of them are necessary for art lasting. Therefore, here comes the appeal of the cooperation of critics and artists to boost contemporary arts.
