In this analysis, the arguer attempts to convince us that the regulation of milk prices can ensure both lower price and adequate supply of milk for comsuers.Although the arguer ‘s reasoning seems to appealing ,we may still find out that this argument rests on a series of unsubstantiated assumption, and is therefore unpersuative as it stands.
First of all,the argument is based on a false analogy, the arguer unfairly assumes that Excello’s milk prices reflect those throughout Batavia, but he does not provide enough evidence that is indeed comparable. There are no links between what had happened in B and E.So the number dairy farms increasing in the past 10 years does not mean the fact that E also developed their farms. However, the arguer provides no evidence to support that this is the case ,nor does the arguer establish
a causal relationship betwwn the number of dairy farms and prices of milk,in anther way ,the number of farms does not necessarily indicate the supply of milk .Inthe addition ,even the production of milk in the country increased in general,no information is offered to show whether the production in E also increased .The reports based on the situation
about the whole country ,it is obvious that the arguer assumes the characteristics of a group apply to every number of that group.
In the second place,we are not informed about how much did the price of milk actually increase after adjustment for inflation .According to the principle of economic ,the balance between supply and requirement plays an essential role in any commercial activity .So we don’t worry about that farmers would receive excessive profits. What’s more , the arguer fails to consider the variation in the demand of milk.It is assumed without justification that background conditions have remained the same at different times .The survey reflects the condition what occurs in the past 10 years. While the demand of milk is full of uncertainties in the future .It is also difficult to anticipate the trend of price of milk. Then, the arguer does not provide a cost benefit analysis. The argument does not provide any about cost, which is thought as
one of fallacies .
What’s more, the arguer fails to consider other possible methods that may regulate lower prices and adequate supply. It may be tha good
idea that we can streagth the competition between the dairy farms.Through the competition , it is easier to achieve the aim which lower price and enough supply .Furtherthemore, the proposed regulation may lead to undersirable consequences. The market has its charm ,such as uncertainty .We can’t expect exactly the result of the regulation such as we do not know what will happen .
In summy, this argument is not persuasive as it stands. To strengthen the argument ,the arguer would have to provide more details about regulation will be effective, and more information about the real condition of supply and prices of milk. |
