From primary school to university, we always learn something only by just remember the fact then pass the numerous tests. As a result we would find that most of the facts we have learnt are forgotten after the exam. Why? I agree with the speaker's assertion that students who have learned only facts have learned very little. And it is helpful to us to memorize facts that to study the things related, but not always obligatory.
Primarily, learn facts by rote are not useful in most cases. Marcus Aurelius, the emperor of Roman, once said in his famous work <Meditations> that: One can not remember the thing he has learnt is not because his memory but he wants to 'learn' the thing for some special purpose not for true knowledge. This sentence expresses a usual circumstance that the students are always learning just to pass the examination. We are too utilitarian to truly learn the knowledge today. The pursuing of knowledge can lead us not only learn a superficial fact but to learn deeply which is the rightist way to learn a fact.
In addition, we can learn knowledge more flexible and free from dull through the understanding of the ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts. First, If we only learn the fact on the books or so, it is just like an armchair strategist, we can never use them. For instance, if we only memorize the answer to a math problem but not understand, when we meet a new problem like this, we can not solve it. In addition, learn the ideas or concepts around a facts is far interesting than just to learn a fact by rote. Learn French, for example, we can learn well and funny by learn the culture behind it.
Further more, to learn the related knowledge help us understand the facts profoundly and comprehensively. For example, it is good for us to understand a poem through it's time background and the authors experience and the condition of that time.
And, when we learn quantum mechanics, it is necessary for us to learn the history of that to understand the whole subject. Philosophy is the same, to learn its history can made us understand the concepts well and why the concepts are like that. Thus, it is very important to us to learn the related background of a fact to gain a mastery of that fact.
However, it is not absolutely that we must learn the related information before learning the facts, some facts should learn by rote. Learn Periodic Table for example, is the basic knowledge of chemistry, without it we can not learn further on chemistry. We have to memorize the element on that table. Or, some facts are more complex or subtle than the fact, that to learn the fact first then to understand the concept related to it is a better choice.
In conclusion, due to the words mentioned above, in most cases, it is important and helpful to understand the ideas, trends and concepts that help explain facts before we learn them. But, in some scenario, study by rote is also necessary. Use both of the measures correctly is the way that leads us to learn the facts truly.
