TOPIC: ISSUE4 - "No field of study can advance significantly unless outsiders bring their knowledge and experience to that field of study."

The complication of the world we live in and the thought we human beings own determines that any field of study is a set of various knowledge, even including something seemly irrelevant. With the knowledge and experience of outsiders, certain field of study can be expected to get through some long-lasting problems, can even make some breakthroughs. However, such outsiders should at least have some relevance to the field we focus on. Otherwise, no matter how highly developed the outsiders are, they will do little help in advancing our destination study.

On one hand, specific knowledge from outsiders can be great supplement to some fields. For example, the study of universe requires a great deal of outsiders' knowledge. They will apply the theory of relativity in physics, the knowledge of particle interchanging in chemistry, the complicated calculation in math, and even the micro-inspect methods in biology. Without these outsiders, specialists can hardly achieve advance in studying the universe: the formation of stars, the chemical changes inside planets, the traveling speed of comets, and whether living-creatures like human have ever existed. In short, only by virtue of those seeming apart but actually closely related outsiders' knowledge can a field of study keep on developing.

On the other hand, it is the experience of outsiders that throws light upon specific field of study, especially the research methods of outsiders. Consider the modern trend of economics study. Unlike the first several hundred years in the history of economics, when economists analyze economic phenomena only in qualitative way, contemporary economists have brought in the methods which used to be applied in math, physics, and even psychology. These methods help us gain a more thorough understanding of economics; from the quantitive aspect we can explain the fluctuations in prices accurately; by establishing models we can predict the trend of certain industries; and through taking people's psychological factors into consideration we are able to explain the irrational behaviors of customers and producers. The outsiders' experience enriches our perspectives looking into the essence of certain phenomena and provides us more effective solutions to long-lasting problems.

But the success achieved by virtue of outsiders' knowledge and experience does not necessarily mean that whatever outsiders can be taken advantage of. At least, they should share some similarity with the subject we engage in. It is unlikely that the knowledge of a musician can help the research of enzyme. Or the experience of a journalist can help the design of a mansion.

To sum up, I strongly agree with the speaker's assertion that no field of study can advance significantly without outsiders bringing in their knowledge and experience. They help a lot to supplement the knowledge web of certain field of study or provide specialists in one field with useful researching tools and perspectives. To perpetuate the rapid development of study, such outsiders' knowledge and experience deserve enough attention to should be encouraged to be introduced in.
There’s nothing to lose.
