The arguer suggests that Mira Vista Collegeshould offer more courses and hire additional job counselors in order to helpMira Vista's graduates find employment. To strengthen his conclusion, he citesstatistics comparing the amount of graduates who have been employed last year.Meanwhile ,he reasons that it is harder for graduates of Mira Vista College toget jobs. However, several logical fallacies have weakened the conclusion.
Firstly the survey the arguer cites, that70 percent of the seniors had found full-time jobs within three months aftercannot lead to the assertion that students of Mira Vista College is moredifficult to find jobs than those of Green Mountain College do. As the sampleof the survey is merely a small scale of graduates who informed the placementoffice that they would be seeking employment, it is probably that mostgraduates who have got jobs didn't informed the placement yet. Under thiscircumstance, the survey is incredible to support the assumption.
Meanwhile, the conclusion that the jobs thegraduates who were not employed in their major field of study got were notperspective is too arbitrary. The majors students chose when entering collegemight not be suit to themselves and they were likely to find jobs they wereinterested in. Common sense tells us, man succeeds in the occupation in whichhe has passion and if these students chose the jobs they loved, the positionswould also be prospective to them.
Furthermore, even assuming the amount ofstudents who have got jobs in Green Mountain College is greater than those inMira Vista College, there is a false analogy in the arguer's claim. Assumingthat Mira Vista College aims at cultivating students in science whereas GreenMountain College intends to produce students who just want to get a job aftergraduation, it is likely that more students in Mira Vista College havecontinued their study and have no interest in seeking jobs. So, it isunconvincing to compare two schools which are of two kinds.
Besides ,the suggestion, that the presidentof Mira Vista College should offer more courses and additional job counselors,is unfounded. By repeatedly emphasizing the correlation between the courses aswell as the job counselors and the likelihood that the graduates can get jobs, the arguer unreasonably equates the correlation with a cause-effectrelationship. However, several other factors can also bring about the chancethat the graduates get jobs. For instance , it may be the geographical factor. As we know , the more prosperous a city is ,the easier the graduates can get ajob; or perhaps other factors such as the majors the students learning ,whichexerts a significant impact upon the likelihood for graduates to get jobs. Anyof these factors ,if true ,would cast considerable doubts on the arguer'sconclusion.
Finally ,even assuming more courses and jobcounselors can make a difference in the possibility of getting jobs, there's noevidence shows that Mira Vista College should offer courses in business andcomputer technology. Without the proof that courses in business and computertechnology do increase the probability to get jobs, it is unreasonable to makethis conclusion.
In sum, the arguer's suggestion based on aseries of statistics is far from persuasive. To advance his argument, he shouldoffer more details about these two schools. It is better to provide the effectof the course and job counselors if possible. |
