As a student interested in arts, I actively support the speaker's statement that art works reveal some ideas hidden behind the superficial aspects of a society. Such function of arts is especially prominent to reveal ideas and impulses that were suppressed or ignored by the mainstream.


让步，大部分艺术作品还是反应的主流思潮,
而且如果社会足够开放自由的话，就少存在“hidden ideas”

Admittedly, the majority of art works convey explicit mainstream ideas.  For example, paintings that are highly appreciated usually cater to the aesthetic taste of common people, and the popular modern constructions are rarely peculiar or weir. Besides, in a democratic and harmonious society where freedom and tolerance are highly valued, and where people and artists are encouraged to express whatever they believe, there’s little reason that ideas and impulses would be “hidden”. Like in ancient Greek when philosophers and artists were given supreme freedom, the prosperity of Greek culture and academia reached its peak.


但有的思潮是迫于压力而被抑制了，人们需要发泄，于是转向艺术（政治层面）
However, some ideas, especially voices of dissents, are hidden and suppressed by the dominant political power thus cannot be freely expressed. Under the governance of an authoritarian regime or a tyrant, people are deprived of the rights to criticize and speak, and anyone who did so would get into trouble. The discontentment and anger of being ruled need to be expressed, and people have no choice but to instill their ideas into abstruse lyrics or figurative literatures with lots of metaphors. In 1980s, for instance, overwhelmed by the impact brought by the reform and open up policy, Chinese were increasingly unhappy about the corrupt officials and about the significant income gap and China was on the verge of social unrest. But the government restricted any public attack towards the regime and policy. The patriot young generation was lost and depressed. Then there came Cui Jian and his "Rock on the new long march" which featured a mix of rock, emotions like confusion and satiric criticism towards the government. Cui soon gained wild popularity among young people and his songs prevailed for a very long time. Likewise, in western we see arts in Renaissance fought against the rotten church. Masterpieces from that period strongly emphasized scientific painting approaches and the biological construction of human bodies instead of abstract almighty gods, and coeval literatures tended to demonstrate the power of human rather than gods. Those trends in Renaissance were actually attempts to break free from mediaeval blindness and usher in science and humanity.
Therefore, relatively speaking, art is a safe way to express discontent against mainstream ideology thus it indeed reveals some hidden ideas.



另外一些ideas不是被压制而是被忽略了（社会问题啥的）
Some ideas are hidden not because they cannot be freely expressed, but because the society paid little attention to them or the majority deliberately ignored them. Art is a ideal way to expose such ideas and impulses aside from direct advocate which might be agitating and poorly accepted. For instance, before 1950s the living status of AIDS patients, homosexuals and other minorities were of no concern of the main stream media, while art works, like movies and document films dug into those hidden lives and help the audience to accept them by representing them in an artistic way. The majority now have accepted the idea that some people are indeed different from us, and we should pay respect to them as well.


In sum, although many art works conform to superficial social preference, some arts do play an important role in revealing hidden ideas that were suppressed or neglected.

其实我心里是觉得，艺术有助于reveal hidden ideas是因为它能以一种比较委婉的方式表现出当局者和社会大众不愿接受的事实，而得到发泄或扩大影响的目的。

对文中例子有些思考，就是80年代青年人的这种思潮，算不算是hidden ideas呢？或者我想举美国那个垮掉一代和嬉皮运动，里面也是摇滚乐反映的，这种非主流的思潮，算不算hidden ideas。还有就是美国人估计都知道六4，但是知不知道崔健或者曹雪芹，就是我们举国内这种例子有没有效果的问题。 感觉自己越是这种简单明白的题目越是没东西写
