50. In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.
首先就是同意
1.说在非学术领域工作可以扩展教师的经验和视野
2.学校的任务不是让学生得高分,而是培养他们的工作技能,适应社会的能力
3.但是太多的非学术工作可能使教师过于追求利益

I agree with the statement that all faculty should spend time working at non-academic professions relevant to the courses they teach, for the reason that contemporary society needs the students who have an ability of applied skills, and students demand a teacher who can apply the theory to the practice. Moreover, students can have a better understanding of what they learn if teachers give many examples in the real-world to explain the boring knowledge, and it also can help students posit their role in real-world after they stepped into the society.

As far as I am concerned, working at non-academic professions could help faculty extend their experience and horizons, thus improve their teaching skills and not limited by the doctrine of textbooks. Just as we know, some classic textbooks or theories like Classic Physics and Computer Science are taught year after year, while the industrial machinery or computer appliance in the real-world are updating day by day. Thus, an embarrass situation occurs: our theory in textbooks cannot keep up with the high pace of technology in the real-world. So, if a teacher only understand the knowledge in books, he/she cannot tell the latest hi-tech revolution the society, the changes of the academic appliance, which leads to that students cannot set a proper position in the society, do not know the latest news of their major fields. In this way I concede faculty should be required to work outside the academic world in order to improve their own skills and experiences.

Moreover, the function of a university or a college, I think, is not to make every student gets A at the exam, instead, the purpose of higher education is to help students use their knowledge and skills to the work, to apply theory to practice, to adapt the society after graduating. For supporting examples, there is a professor who spends all his/her time in campus, this professor may do best in academic studies, but he/she only tells students the explanation of the Socrates’ Philosophy System, the way to solve the Pythagorean Theorem. Under this case, we cannot image how the students could be qualified for their work. On the contrary, once the professor has some experiences in working non-academic fields, he/she would like to tell the students how to use the philosophy to knock the door of this mysterious world and find the truth of living, how to use a mathematic axiom to make a drawing of industrial machinery. In this way, the professor shortens the distance of knowledge in campus and the demands of job markets; students get more knowledge about the society at the same time.

However, just as an old Chinese saying goes: "going too far is as bad as not going far enough", too much work out of academic filed may do harm to instruction. What is more, some teachers even put too much attention on the interests or money that non-academic professions bring with, this is not only do harm for the students’ study, but also do harm for the academic spirit. For example, some professors in medicine school study the technology of cloning human beings despite the ethics of the society, some teachers from computer department spend all their time coding programs for an international corporation but care little about their students. We must remember the role of a teacher is to teach students instead of making money, the aim of academic is to discover this mysterious world instead of seeking business interests. Teachers is not business, the knowledge of a teacher is measured by people’s conscience, not money. So universities and colleges give a limit of faculty’s non-academic professions and make some role about how faculty do their non-academic works in specific.

In sum, I maintain that without a necessary non-academic work, teachers tend to have a short sight on their own theory. Only put theory and practice together could teachers be experienced, and students could benefit from teachers' experience. So, It should be encouraged that faculty have non-academic professions relevant their majors in order to make an effective and successful education for students.
