Is loyalty-whether to one's friends, to one's school or place of employment, or to any institution-all too often a destructive force instead of a positive force? The speaker asserts so. I concede that loyalty some times may serve as a detrimental force, but if people understand the true essence of loyalty, then it will definitely be a positive force.
Loyalty means support and duty. We can hardly imagine what the society would be like without loyalty. Actually, loyalty is the basis on which that people interact. Without loyalty, two friends do not trust each other, and they can not exchange ideas about some very crucial decisions. Thus, there will be no person from whom an individual seek help and suggestion. The friendship between Friedrich Engels and Karl Marx is worshiped and admired by almost every person. Karl Marx, the German Communist leader, led a miserable life, which render him often penniless. Engels, as a close friend of Marx, supported him almost in every way. Not only did Engels give money to support Marx, but Engels helped to finish the classic literature Das Kapital after Marx's death. Without Engels' loyalty to their friendship, we can not appreciate the masterpiece of their book. Loyalty between employers and employees is also of paramount importance, since loyalty can ensure that both sides have the same object and work on it.
However, if loyalty infringe upon other people’s well being and legal rights, then it is a negative force, especially when people just loyal for loyalty's sake without considering whether their behavior is legitimate or morally accepted. For supporting example one need no further to see the biggest political scandal in history, Watergate scandal. Five people broke into the Democratic national committee’s Watergate office complex located in Washington. D. C. Finally, police found that it was a spying activity and the President Richard Nixon was also involved. The five persons did that because they were loyal to the President Nixon and they wanted to help him being reelected. We can clearly discern that this kind of loyalty is destructive force since the behavior not only deceived the public, but also violated the law. In short, this kind of loyalty is based on violating other people's legal right.
To conclude, loyalty itself is a good virtue. It is people who can not understand the meaning of it that render it a detrimental force. Loyalty means support and duty, but it does not mean unconditional support. People should judge whether the loyalty violate other people's legal rights. Loyalty without hurting a third person is the essence of the virtue and should be cherished by every person. |
