之前有用《十天突破新托福essays》复习,现在一边琢磨OG一边看185篇的提纲;

Students should choose the more difficult and challenging classes in college or university even if they cannot get a good grade

WORDS: 391          TIME: 00:30:00          DATE: 2010-4-16 下午 09:26:50

Since colleges and universities are mainly the places to impart knowledge,  it then becomes a vital concern for students to decide which classes to attend so as to optimize their knowledge specturm. Judging from my perspective, it might be neither necessary nor practical to require students choose the more difficult and challenging ones even if they cannot get a good grade.

First of all, the paramount function of university education is to better prepare students with their future career. Among others, only a small fraction of students will choose to further their academic pursuit after graduation. For them, admittedly, more difficult and challenging classes might be conducive as such courses help deepen their understanding on the theories and ideas in which they are interested or might choose as postgraduate concentration. Yet for the majority who will hit the real world after graduation, what they need most is employable knowledge, which is oftentimes the basic yet fundamental in a certain realm. To them, the advanced knowledge which is only suitable to specialists and theorists are, at best, useless.

On a pragmatic scale, it is also not proper for students to risk taking more difficult and challenging classes. Not all students are on the same level. For those who learns quicker and shows more academic aspiration, attending more difficult and challenging classes might be the perfect way to expand their intellectual outlook. Yet this is not always the case, especially when it comes to average students or even below. For these groups of students, it would be even more important for them to first grasp solidly the easy or medium level of knowledge taught in class, without which they certainly cannot go further. If they insist on selecting courses than are beyond their level, chances are that their academic interest will be dampened and, what is worse, their self-confidence frustrated.

As the saying goes, one man's meat might well be another's poison. As for the courses to attend in college or university, "the more difficult and challenging, the better" is by no means a golden rule which every student should abide by even at the price of a good grade. Instead, only what is most suitable could be the best way out.

谢谢大家!

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? A teacher who is a serious and strict person is more effective in teaching than a teacher who is a humor and easygoing person.
字数:426 时间:40:00

For most students, teachers are like candles that lighten both their intellectual outlook and mental horizon. In light of the important influence teachers may have on their students, question arises like whether a serious and strict teacher or a humorous and easygoing one is better for the students. And for me, the answer would be far from lopsided which needs to be clearly analyzed case by case.

First, consider those primary school students. Since they are mainly the beginners of all the knowledge they are going to absorb, nothing will be more crucial to their education at this level than the cultivation of their interest. And the best way to nurture their academic curiosity is through an easy and encouraging pedagogical approach. If a teacher is fossilized to the strict rules and compulsory assignments, chances are that the curiosity of the students to a certain subject will be dampened even before it is forged. In contrast, if a teacher could replace those serious lectures by more vivid presentations and interactive games, or settle more time to answering the seemingly awkward questions by his/her students in a friendly and inspiring manner, then children's learning desire can certainly be stimulated to a great extent.

However, when students are on the right track of the pursuit of knowledge,a humorous and easygoing teacher may not perform as well as his/her counterpart who is serious and strict. This is inevitably, inescapably and irreovcably the case as the academic quest, more often than not,is "a thorny road of honor". It takes countless failures and mistakes before students could finally reach some achievements in a certain realm. Without the constant supervision and strict regulation of teachers, students may easily give up or be distracted whenever facing difficulties. At this level of study, a serious and strict teacher will not only serve as a spur to motivate the students on the right track; these characters can also help him/her inculcate the comprehensive knowledge more effectively-just consider: if a teacher fills his/her class with jokes and games, how could students expect him/her articulate the profound idea of Einstein's relativity?

Teachers are always good companions of the students in every phase of their study. Granted, both strictness and easygoingness are important characteristics to help them be good teachers. Yet according to the distinctive levels of their students, the weight of such qualitites also varies from time to time. Consequently, it would be better to use the method that suits the students at their particular stage, than to take a 'panacea' approach which is doomed to fail.

Do you agree or disagree the following statement?Successful people take new things and take risks rather than the thing thatthey've done well.
WORDS: 374
TIME: 00:30:00
DATE: 2010-4-18 下午 11:03:39

There are numerous ways through whichpeople can attain success. However, although some people do build their successon practing(更正:practicing things they have done well, it ismy perspective that even more are outstanding for their openness to risks andnew things.

Admittedly, success sometimes does mean theproficiency in things which people have kept doing. Practice makes perfect; themore you repeat the things you have already done well, the sharper the edge youmight earn. This is best illustrated by those atheletics(更正:athletes competing in sports. For instance, without the accurate three-point-shots and excellent agility, which might havebeen practiced thousands of times, how could Steve Nash be one of the greatest pointguards in the NBA history?

Yet in most other cases, taking risks andtrying new things is a better way toward success than clinging on the thingsone already know well. This is the case first because challenges are often thebest incubator of new opportunities. Just consider the success story ofFacebook which is now sweeping the entire globe. Actually, we can easily findthat the concept of communicative social network is totally unfamiliar to boththe users and the market. Accordingly, nobody can ensure whether such a newthing will be willingly accepted. Had Mark Zackberg given up at that time andcontinued being a top student at that most prestigeous(更正:prestigious university, nevertheless, therevolution of internet communication would not have happened at such anoverwhelmingly staggering speed. Of course, neither would Zackberg’s success beso remarkable.

Moreover, by frequently taking risks andgoing for novelties, people are simultaneously molding their characters whichare pivotal to success. New things help them open up their mind, while theprocess of taking risks and the conquest of difficulties fortifies theircourage, tenacity and endurance. Even if they fail temporarily, these preciousqualities will stay with them and help them excel out in the long run. LanceArmstrong's success at Tour de France after being punched down by cancer, in mypoint of view, is exactly a case in point.

To conclude, while agreeing with the oldsaying that "All road leads to Rome", I cherish even more the beliefthat the willingness of taking risks and trying new things have(更正:has more weight on people's quest tosuccess.

Do you agree or disagree the followingstatement: It is more important to reserve land for human beings than forendangered animals.
TOPIC: ISSUE125 - "The past is nopredictor of the future."
WORDS: 299
TIME: 00:30:00
DATE: 2010-4-20 下午 11:44:12

With an ever increasing speed oftechnological advancement and population explosion, the need for land isgrowing tremendously almost with every minute that passes. While it isimportant to reserve land to ensure people's survival, people should notneglect the equal significance of reserving land for endangered animals.

The first reason that people should reserveadequate land for endangered animals is that it has been we humans that havereduced those wild animals to living on the edge of extinction. Had it not been our greed for natural resources to meet our own materialistic needs such aswearing fur coats, purchasing redwood furniture and driving limos using fossilfuels, disasters like deforestation and desertification would not have happenedin such a tragic speed. Dodo birds, South China Tigers, Yangtze River Dolphins...countless wildlife has died from hands of mankind, can we bear the price to see more?

Actually, ensuring an ecologically-balancedhome for endangered animals will not only benefit these wildlife, it can betterthe environment in which we human beings are living as well. Mother Nature hasits own balance of food chain. With a stable and sustainable living environment, endangered animals can easily breed and nuture(更正:nurture their offsprings(更正:offspring单复数同形); as a result, the vulnerable biodiversity can gradually be strengthened. For humanity, an ameliorated biodiversity not only means the fantasticpicturesque spot on our way of traveling, it will also have positive effect onthe air we breath in, the water we drink, the soil we live on, and so forth.

To conclude, although it is not completelyunwarranted to reserve land for ourselves, both lessons from history and therationale of ecology have demonstrated that we should never again satisfy ourown needs at the cost of sacrificing our animal friends.
