It is the age nowadays when the most academic fields are led by the authorities, and people learning in these fields usually follow the steps of the predecessors. What we should keep in mind is that only by accepting the knowledge passively can’t the human being create more new theories and make use of it to contribute to the development of the whole society.

Most people have once been a student, and we are used to accepting the knowledge passively. But, why? It is because of the idleness that we are unwilling to make it clear the whole pattern and the skeleton of the knowledge and sometimes revision of the past lessons. We seldom ask ourselves: “Why?”-it is not only a simple sentence, but also the difficult one-since the course of seeking the answer will take our time and effort on learning. As a result of that, we are in favor of accepting and digesting alone. Skepticism to whatever the students learn could to a large degree help them establish a complete basement and apprehend the core of the theories of the predecessors.

As we all know, when people are doing research, they base their study on the achievement by the authoritative predecessors. Nevertheless, the authority might make mistakes. If Galileo didn't question Aristoteles's opinion ,that the more weight the thing owns, the faster the thing falls, and make the experiment on the Leaning Tower of Pisa, people will never know the acceleration of gravity, nor the development of the classic mechanics by Newton. Through the examination and provement of the past knowledge, the flaws could be found and corrected. Thus, being bold to question the authority, which is a kind of innovation, is the spring of the progress of every academy in society.

Nevertheless, sometimes the students can’t be put to a good situation of questioning the authority even if they want to ask. In a lot of Asian countries, a huge burden from the examination is the product of the policy, under which students go enter a higher school. The pictures can always be found that one student go to ask the teacher one confusing point on somewhere of the textbook, then the teacher tell him: “This point is ambiguous now, but what you should remember is to write what is on the textbook, otherwise you will get no score in the exam.” What a dread! Students always haven’t got the chance to explain their own ideas in the exams, or they won’t get a high score in China, which leads to the decrease of the ability of the innovation of the Chinese students. Now more and more colleges and universities pay attention to this skill in order to cultivate more talented people, whom the society is eager, and inject the new blood to the old and laggard academic fields.

In my humble opinion, a certain skepticism could stimulate the students understand the knowledge thoroughly and systematically. Once the habit of questioning what to study has come into being, the probe of the mysterious and unfathomable abyss of the universe will be more likely to be deeper and more profound.

Skepticism during study is so crucial that it is the impetus of the development in society. In schools and universities, if the students are educated to brig skepticism to what they have learned, they are more likely to have their own ideas when they grow up. But we should keep in mind that skepticism should be moderate.

Skepticism is the driving force of creation and development. In every field in our society, we can see the great advantages of skepticism. In science field, scientists who are skeptical about the former theory may devote themselves in experiments and reading relative materials. They always ask themselves why and thus they must learn more to prove or disprove a certain theory. That’s the way science developed, for it is thousands of scientists’ skeptics that result in the progress or improvement in science. Without Plank’s skeptics to classical Newtonian Principles, he could have not introduced the quantum theory, which gave us a new and creative perspective to the world we live in. In philosophy field, the skeptics among philosophers happened quite frequently. For unlike science, philosophy is more abstract and sometimes even abstruse. Thus it is naturally that philosophers questioned others’ theories and ideas and improve them or develop their own. Karl Marx was skeptical about Hegel’s view that history is determined by the universal idea, and his important notion is that economic system at any given time determines the prevailing ideas. In a word, skepticism can put the society to move forward.

In schools and universities, the students are the future of the society. Developing the habit of being skeptical does well to the students and the whole society. Students should really be skeptical about the knowledge they have learned. There are two reasons. Firstly, the students are skeptical about a certain issue or theory means that they have not completely understand the real reasons or the origin of these theories. At such times, skeptics can help them to search for the main reasons behind the seemingly right. During this period, students may understand more deeply to a certain problem. Secondly, the students who are more likely to question what they have taught tend to be more creative. For in some cases, the students believe that they own way of solving a problem may be more efficient than the one teachers taught. A large part of inventions are a kind of improvement. To encourage students to skeptic is a kind of way to encourage them to create something new.

However, students’ over skepticism may have some adverse effect on their own study. To some extent, to skeptic everything is a little bit dangerous because it may be rather hard for these students to accept others’ views. Thus the teaching of teachers and the learning of students are likely to be hindered, which result in the decline in the learning efficiency. After all, some fundamental theories and ideas have existing for thousands of years, and they have been proved true by many people and many experiments. Then the skeptics towards these theories are only a waste of time. Once the student develop the habit of question everything they learned, they may face great difficulty in accepting others because in their point of view, skeptic is a natural process.

To sum up, skepticism plays a prominent role in the development of all humankinds. Without skepticism, we may lack the driving force to move on. We benefit a lot from skepticism in many fields and the education of skepticism to students is a decisive factor to their future career and the future of the world. However, we should always keep in mind that skepticism is not questioning everything around us and that kind of questioning sometimes can be a waste of time.

Studying with skepticism has been talkedabout for such a long time in education. It is totally different from acceptingacknowledge passively, and is a new approach towards the reality and essentialof what we acknowledged. Though not fully agree with the speaker, I have faithin that skepticism in study is necessary and indispensible.

Study is in the similar way with researchwhich needs critical thinking, a flexible brain and the courage of innovation. Criticalthinking is formed with process of serious thinking in logic. That seriousthinking contains not only figuring out the relationship of things along thelogic chain but also asking why or how on each step on the chain in skepticismto make the thinking more rigorous and logic andprompt the progress of society. When Watt was repairing Newcomen steam enginewhich is the predecessor of Watt steam engine, he found the thermal efficiencyof steam engine is low and the assumption of the detachment of condensatorensued. It is the first step of the appearance of Watt steam engine. It is hardto imagine that without skeptic thinking and only through accepting theexisting of defects, how many years would our society go backwards.

Besides, students could benefit much frombeing skeptic with their study. First, knowledge from teachers and books is notall fully testified and flawless, the active skeptical learning make studentsto think critically and sometimes find existing false. Second, Learning withskepticism also prompts students to explore more after class by themselves.Usually it is far from enough to persuade students themselves just by readingthe materials in books, so after-class researches are necessary so as to bewell-informative to make judgment. Moreover, to be skeptic in what they havelearned is crucial means by which they could practice their creative andcritical thinking tend to lead a vital effect on personal development onindividuals which could help in one’s whole career.

There is no doubt that students should notaccept whatever they are taught without thinking or turning it into their own wisdom,while putting too much emphasizes on skepticism may wrongly guide students onthe way of learning. What we value the most is not pure skepticism, but theprocess of thinking towards skepticism. In other words, progress is moreimportant than result. While many students may be misguided by the advocatingof skepticism that is put forward questions. Skepticism is not criticizingeverything we are taught on purpose. Instead, it is a kind of critical thinkingwhich entails elemental knowledge background and rigorous logic.Questions without inner thinking and analysis are meaningless and just wastesof time. The most important goal of education is to culture the independentability of thinking rather than being skeptic in whatever they are taught. Nomatter in study or research, it is more important for a student to have his ownview after careful study and analysis.

On balance, study with skepticism is animportant way to create a critical thinking which is beneficial to both theprogress of society and individual student. However, being skeptic also needsknowledge background and logic thinking. Definitely, it is also meaningless toquestion everything intentionally.

In this statement, the author asserts that students should try to be skeptical to whatever they learn rather than accepting knowledge passively. I agree with the author in most case, skepticism is really indeed for students and it can stimulate their creativity. Besides, question what they are taught can help them to accept new concept better.

To begin with, students should have an adequate number of knowledge from which they will benefit a lot for their further study. Although learning new things sometimes can be quite dull and students may have to accept what they are taught passively, students who are knowledgeable can bring certain skepticism to whatever they study. Knowledge is the foundation of skepticism. For instance, before Michael Faraday proposed the law of electromagnetic induction, he had amount of knowledge of Physics and Faraday said that it was the Encyclopedia Britannica that let him accept the concept of electricity for the first time. On the basis of the law of Current magnetic effect proposed by Hans Christian Oersted, Faraday found the phenomenon of electromagnetic induction. Obviously, large number of knowledge is the base of skepticism, only rely on abundance of knowledge can students be percipient to whatever they study.

However, being skeptical can also help students to comprehend whatever they study well. As students should have enough knowledge about the thing they question in order to found the shortage of it. In that way students will have an adequate understand of the thing they are skeptical to. For example, if one questions the law of electromagnetic induction, then he/she should fully grasp the law, having knowledge about its theoretical basis and try to find out its deficiency through which he/she will have a clear understand of the law of electromagnetic induction, no matter he/she has find its deficiency or not. What’s more, students being critical to whatever they are taught can let them be comprehensive in thinking and solving problems. Thus, Students should bring certain skepticism to whatever they learn so that they will learn everything well.

Besides, students’ being critical to what they are taught will contribute to building students’ creativities and having courage to challenge authority which may correct the deficiency of previous theories and promote the development of this field. For instance, Aristotle believed that objects of different weights are proportional to the speed and weight when falling down from a height and the weightier must first to the floor, which had not yet been publicly doubted almost near to 2000 until Galileo. Through repeated observation, research, and experiment, Galileo found that if two objects of different weight simultaneously from the same height down, the two will be landing at the same time. Galileo boldly challenged the viewpoint of Aristotle and promote the development of mechanics.

To sum up, it is necessary for students to be skeptical to whatever they learn. It not only can benefit students to have comprehension of whatever they study, but also can let students have the ability of innovation and nerve of challenge to authority.

The most important reason why I admit the significanceof skepticism is that skepticism can make your knowledge deeply impressed andcultivate independent thinking ability and self-motivation. In psychologicalview, what you remember most clearly and mostly cherish is something that youget it through a long process of diligence and efforts. Similarly, a studentwho feel suspected about a theory at first and then get approval or validationabout this hypothesis would most likely learn the theory better than acceptingit passively. What’s more, passively accepting anything from teacher is nothingbut a machine which should be eliminated in study. Skepticismcultivates us to think objectively, independently and critically and thus setup our own distinctive judge criterion and value system.


In the first place, we come to science which isperhaps the most favorite place of skeptic spirit. The pursuit of physicalprinciples and natural truth will never meet the end yet skepticism is the mostpowerful impetus paving this long way. Copernicus and Einstain………


In the second place, we also need the skepticism instudying history since on most conditions, official historical record iscompiled by political party or government in order to dominant the populace inthought and rule their behavior which would serve to maintain and strengthenthe authority. Therefore, this kind of record would more or less distort thehistorical truth such as amplify the achievement of the present party andovershadow the scandals or rumors.


However, skepticism should not be overdone and weshould hold the critical view to address the different degrees of suspicion ona case-by-case basis. In some field like religious belief, the skepticism wouldsometimes serve to be harmful. Religion is something that can give youinspiration, passion and courage when you are lost or frustrated; religiongives you hope and spiritual sustenance no matter how bad the reality is;religion is the source of power in your heart. Therefore, sometimes we know theredoes not necessarily exist the god, Jesus or paradise, but it does not matterwe believe in it even it is visional, just because it can make us happy in thewhole life.
Suspecting everything would be painful and frustrated.
