Painting, music, literature are not just artistic expressions and are closely related to our daily life. The arts, created by those great artists, tell us much about our society. Arts provide an opportunity for human beings to learn the hidden ideas and impulses of our society, though the process may not be perceived in our daily life.

The hidden ideas of a society have a subtle influence on the creation of arts. As a kind of method to express the artists’ thought, arts always reflect the artists’ ideas. While the artists are the people who use their perception and imagination to describe the world they live in and the people who are the most sensitive to the hidden ideas in the society. Artists’ feeling about the world comes from their observation and exploration, which lead them to acquire and apprehend the ideas that other people cannot see. For example, the advent of surrealism in the early 1920s well reflected the hidden thoughts of people of that age. It reflected the young bourgeoisie in Europe, who felt scared about the reality and were in a mood of unease. As a result, surrealism revealed the ideas, which are quite hidden, in these people’s minds.

Without doubt, we can find the trends and impulses of society in arts. The impulse of a society comes from its people’s attitude towards the regulations or rules of the society. And artists are living in the society and always observe it in their sensitive eyes. A real artist can never miss even the most subtle trend in society and that is why arts can reveal the impulses of the society. In history, each time before the change of dynasty, arts forms that expressed people’s hatred and dissatisfaction about the regulations, rules or regime of the society always emerged. For example, Guernica, painted by Pablo Picasso, showed the tragedies of war and the suffering it inflicts on individuals, especially innocent civilians. The famous painting was created during the Spanish Civil War after an aerial destruction of a Basque town by fascists. It reflected people’s ideal against war and fascists as well as the hidden trends that fascism would finally come to an end. A myriad of ancient Chinese poetry about the sufferings of people came from the strict regime of those arbitrary rulers and with the increase in the amount of these kinds of poetry the change of dynasty always occurred, which was quite a case in point.

However, it is not necessary that artistic expressions are the only kind of way to play the role of revealing hidden ideas and impulses. In other words, without arts, these trends can also emerge, in other ways. Large amounts of great events, turning point or some development in technology also have bearing on the hidden elements of a society. The Industrial Evolution in the United Kingdom, which later spread throughout Europe, resulted from the colonial expansion of the 17th century with the development of international trade, creation of financial markets and accumulation of capital. It also had something to do with the British Agricultural Revolution, which made food production more efficient and less labor-intensive, forcing the surplus population who could no longer find employment in agriculture into industry.

In addition to the revelation of hidden ideas and impulses, arts also reflected the realistic world. Though the most distinctive characteristic of arts is the beauty, the truth of arts also plays a non-neglected role in the history of humankinds. The documentary literature provides us with an accurate description of a certain event; in the same way, we can learn the landscape, the architecture, and the people of a certain place from related paintings. Thus arts not only informed us what might happen, but also what had happened.

To sum up, art is such a complex concept that we cannot know the values and functions of arts so clearly. But without doubt, arts can really reveal the hidden elements of the society, though not the only way. Besides, arts also act as a reminder, whose function is to tell us the events that had already taken place in our world.

I concede that arts can reveal certain ideas and ideologies of a society in most cases, especially when it comes to a particular school of art. However, the word “otherwise” seems to imply that without arts these ideas and impulses cannot manifest themselves, to which I would like to take exception. After all, there are other ways in which a society can express its ideas and impulses and the art cannot reflect these ideas always.


Arts–such as painting, music, literature, and etc-can reveal the hidden ideas. Because arts are also a part of mental activities which can reflect people’s thinking at that time and their ideologies in a special time. For instance, the abstract painting in drawing, Anti-Marxist tone in music, futurism in poem, and stream of consciousness in novel are all the parts which made up of modernism. All of these use different techniques to show the same idea that advocating anti-realism, upholding arbitrary and frenzied self-expression. Such as the abstract painting which against the classical artistic tradition, seeking for new and unconventional subjects and matters which may reveal the poor and empty inner world of these painters. And as well as the abstract painter, the novelists who work on stream of consciousness may worship Austrian pathologist Freud's psychoanalysis advocating describe the field of dreams and the unconscious man, and pursuit "abstract mysterious kingdom”. All of their action show the modernism ideas, which effected by various non-rational philosophy and social thoughts.

However, not all art can reflect social trends, some just a pure act of art. Especially in the field of painting and architecture, the building can reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society some times, such as postmodernism buildings which main concern in architectural style rather than the function and technology of the building. Although postmodernism buildings can reflect modernism, some other structures are just built for the needs of living. These buildings fail to be able to show the hidden ideologies. And when it comes to painting, the sketch from nature may also hardly reflect the ideas and impulses of a society. As the painters do this is just a pure act of art which may for enhance their painting skills. So, not all the kinds of arts can reflect the hidden ideologies and impulses of the society.

Besides, not only art can reveal the hidden thoughts of society, which is one of the objects that can reflect the trends of society, there may be something else, such as the specific behavior of people. For instance the Beat Generation, they were not just as a literary genre that reflects the hidden thoughts of society in 20th century, and these writers act is also a manifestation of this trend, such as they live a simple life, being solvent in their outlook , hi wear outlandish, tired of work and school, refused to take any social obligation to wandering for pleasure, contempt for law and order in society, against all stereotypes and the secular rule of monopoly capital to resist external aggression and apartheid, hate machine civilization, and they always look for new stimuli, for absolute freedom, lust, drug abuse and so forth. And "Beat" writers’ attitudes and views of mainstream culture after World War II influenced generations of people and their cultural understanding. Although the "Beat the faction" is basically a pure literary genre, but the Beat Generation throughout the Western culture is a powerful and far-reaching, their influences not just in a few writers or works, what make people remember them are their behaviors at the same time.

To sum up, the art is not only the way that can reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society; there are some others ways that can also work. But the arts can reflect the trends of the society in most case especially when the author wants to show his views though this works.

For thousands of years, with the development of social activities and civilization, it came into being many styles of art. But the common ground is that, it is essentially the reflection of social culture and thoughts or ideas of people. Art, no matter what it is, painting, music, literature or carving and so on, represents the social problems, people’s emotion or feelings, different kinds of ideas, at different period or circumstance. And most important, different from other social activities, reflection of art can be an inconspicuous way. It can reveal hidden ideas of people and society. In literature area, for instance, Gulliver’s travels, one of the most famous novels, actually reflect the theme that a satirical view of the state of European government, and of petty differences between religions. We can see that Jonathan Swift, the author of this novel, uses literature art to reflect the hidden ideas. Similarly, Marseillaise song, the representative of music art, reveals the people’s emotion and their willing of fighting for their homeland. So based on these things, we can that art reveal the hidden ideas other than things we can directly see or feel.

Moreover, as the statement indicated, art reveals the impulses of a society, also can be the motivation of social progress. Art, especially music and literature, can deeply affect people’s emotion or thinking. So we imagine that it is more easily to motivate people to do something or to have an effect on the their behavior. As we just mentioned, Marseillaise song, it reveals people’s feeling. However, most important, it inspires people to fight for their country and become the motivation of their victory. So art can also reveal impulse of society, can be the motivation of social progress.

However, some art, including paintings or music, is only the reflection of individual feelings. This kind of art doesn’t stand for majority or society.

In a word, based on what we have discussed, we can say that art reveal hidden ideas and impulses of a society, is also the motivation of social progress.

When we talk about arts, it is likely that we tend to combine art works with personal experience or social trend during the period of the artist pretending that the works do have some hints of discontent estimation of the society. It truly is in many cases, while this may be a prejudice to consider all of art works reveal society’s hidden ideas and impulses.

As mentioned above, many artists characterize their miserable experience through their works to deliver some ideas and even some impulses of the society. These works not only are the tool to express the emotion of the artists, but also give some expectation of them. Let’s take Guernica as a telling example, which shows immeasurable denouncement and remonstrance to the barbarous behaviors of fascists of Picasso, as a painter full of justice. The Decameron is a story collection by Giovanni Boccaccio in the surface, while it leaves a great influence to the literary history. In the book, the characters of it are considered as Four Cardinal Virtues and the Three Theological Virtues. And The Decameron also fustigates feudal privilege and the inequality of men and women.

While nothing is absolute. And there is no exception of art. Some of the artists create these arts with the inspiration just from imagination or some kind of passion of their inner world. And it is hard to generalize actual meaning from their works. Zdzislaw Beksinki is famous known as a fantasy artist. His well-known paintings during is “fantastic realism” period often conclude some disturbing imagines and surrealistic surroundings. His inspiration seems to come from the car accident, and after months of recovery, his paintings began to emerge with bodies and bones or other incomprehensible objects. These real fantasies were from his imagination and even himself did not know the meaning of his paintings, which is the reason that he did not name any of his paintings. In his own words, his paintings were like photographing in the dream. Meaning means nothing to him. His prime thought is so simple and direct, which is a passion of creating from his heart. Modern popular music are composed to express the composer’s personal emotions according to their personal experience through music. The goals of these creations are to give resonance to their listeners rather than to reveal ideas and impulses of society. Similarly, the realistic works, like portrait and landscape, are the reflection of the real world and they do not reveal social ideas and impulses, too.

From another respect, many of the arts are reflections of the mainstream ideas instead of otherwise hidden ones. Homeric Hymns is a collection of ancient Greek hymns recording the society from 11 B.S. to 9 B.C. representing the picture of ancient Greek. The Bible, as a compass to Christians, guides people to have a pure, endurable and complete life with the love of God and an accommodating heart. These two are literature arts that show the mainstream ideas of the society. In the meantime, there is no doubt that the study of Homeric Hymns and The Bible could be impulses of the progress of our society.

With the analysis above, it is apparent that it is inconsiderable to generalize that the arts all reveal hidden ideas and impulses of the society. When analyses and assess arts, we should not bare the prejudice that all art works have potential meaning, which would only add worries to ourselves. While, it is also necessary to get a general understanding about the background of the artist and his style before enjoy his art works.

Admittedly, art can display the hidden impulses of a society to a large extent but not the entire part. The social values and impulses also lie in many other aspects such as history and customs in daily life. In the first place, we consider the history which cultivates a distinctive cultural and national identity. History is the rudiment and origin of presence while presence is the iteration and continuance of history. History can reveal the profound nature, ingrained ideology of a nation or an age and therefore, the hidden ideas and impulses. For example, the Jew nation who experience a rough and endless way from Old Egypt time to presence. …….. The historical confrontation in territory, politics and religion leads to the enduring conflicts between Israel and Palestine; The isolated geographic conditions and the policy of closing the door to international world in modern history of China reveals the ingrained isolation and self-satisfaction in Chinese people.
