Scientific research and development are always priorities in our society. They promote a nation’s development and thriving. Does that mean government should place few restrictions on scientific research and development? Some people agree with this opinion because they believe scientific research and development are always beneficial to improving individual’s life quality and national development. But I tend to disagree with this statement. The reasons are as following.
It is undeniable that scientific research and development is crucial in any society, which provides people with highly sophisticated electronic technology such as computer, electronic communication technology and even better disease treatment and prevention methods, etc. It seems all of the scientific researches are beneficial for our society and all of them should be encouraged instead of restricted. But how about cloning research? Is it totally beneficial to our society? What will happen if there is no restriction on human cloning research? Ethnical concerns, violence, rights of cloned people, the health of cloned people will become unavoidable problems. No one can predict what will happen if cloned people become alive in current society. They may be more aggressive than normal people, and more likely to commit crime, or they may be suffering from discrimination and become isolated in the society, or even they may be have more health problems than normal people therefore increase the medical and financial burden to our society.
Therefore, proper restrictions on scientific research and development will help our society avoid some serious problems.
Lack restrictions on scientific research and development may lead human beings to degeneration or even extinction. In recent decades, various kinds of automatic machines become popular in our society and the numbers of these machines are soaring. Is it really a good thing to create more automatic machines? The sophisticated technology in this field creates various kinds of highly humanized robots who can replace the role of people in our society. Some of them work as housekeeper who can do most of chores. Some of them work as nurses taking care of the old or patient. And some of them will be Military robots who will take place of soldiers in battles in the future. And even in recently there are robots who are created to be sexual partners of human. Our imaginations of robuts’ abilities to perform human tasks are very limited. If government does not place enough necessary restrictions on robots research, there will be a day on which robots will replace our human beings on this planet.
Not all scientific research is beneficial to human beings and our planet. Actually, in contrast, some scientific research fields do great harm on human and our planet. The examples are nuclear weapon research, terrorism tools research and so on. The explosion of atom bomb in Hiroshima in Japan is a good example. It not only resulted in numerous immediate deaths, but also caused long-term consequences. People live near the explosion were suffered from increased mortality and incidence of cancer, birth defects and so on.
In conclusion, the significance of scientific research and development cannot be denied, but government should also pay attention on certain aspects of scientific research and development, and place proper restrictions on scientific research and development to make sure that our society are truly benefited from scientific research and development.
