169.The following appeared in a letter from a department chairperson to
the president of Pierce University.
(
time 60min)
"Some studies conducted by Bronson College, which is also located in a [small] town, reveal that both male and female [professors] are happier living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same [geographic area]. Therefore, in the interest of attracting the most gifted [teachers] and [researchers] to our faculty and improving the [morale] of our entire staff, we at Pierce University should offer employment to the spouse of each new faculty member we hire. Although we cannot expect all offers to be accepted or to be viewed as an ideal job offer, the money invested in this effort will clearly be well spent because, if their spouses have a chance of employment, new professors will be [more likely] to accept our offers."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The argument is not well reasoned. As the speaker presented, both male and female professors are happier living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area. So he draw the conclusion that in the interest of attracting the most gifted teachers and researchers to their faculty and improving the morale of their entire staff, they at Pierce University should offer employment to the spouse of each new faculty member they hire, and the offers are more likely be accepted .It is not impossible. However, if we want to get a more convincing solution, we would give another reasonable reason.
There are a lot of reasoning problems in this state. The first thing the speaker fail to consider is
the real fact that makes them, male and female professors, happier .We could certainly hold the view that happiness can be created by a lot of elements, such as, good living condition, comfortable eating, funny story, kind communication and so on. So we can't easily settle that as long as spouse coming together, living in the same geographic area, happiness could be existed. In this sense, if simple make the spouse together but without put them in a happy station. This kind of considering about attracting the most gifted teachers and researchers would be fail. In addition, not all professors are able to be teachers or researchers. As we all known, professors could be good at and fit to different kind of jobs. In this respect, we can't warrant that all spouses could be the gifted teachers and researchers. What's more, saying that improving the morale of entire staff has something to do with most gifted teachers and researchers is unsound. Improving the morale may be the respect of sprite. That is to say, gifted teachers and researchers also could be out of morale. So we aren't able to expect that they can bring the morale to others, obviously, let alone the entire staff.
The studies conducted by Bronson College also could be unconvincing. For the reasons that we don't know how they get the result and how many spouse they surveyed and how long the result have been found out. It is possible that the result is brought from another town and the spouse, also having the chance that migrated from another place and the result may be found out long time ago. That is to say, the studies must invalid. Therefore, all of the reasoning could be wrong. Also, there is no settling that the reason the spouse would accept the offers are due to the money invested. Easily understand that we choice a job not only because of we love it but also need alternative facts, which including environment, work time, holiday and so on. So it is invalid that having the confidence that new professors will be more likely to accept the offers only for the reason that they and their spouse working together.
In sum, in the interest of attracting the most gifted teacher and researchers and improving the morale of the entire staff can not be easily depending on the spouse of professors. There could be another efficient way to get the aim. For example, we can hire them directly in interviews without more considering the spouse facts. And if we want a trustworthy answer and plan, we need more consideration. And that is only a complete reasoning.
