TOPIC: ISSUE153 - "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."
As far as I am concerned, yes, we should not accept knowledge passively, not just take what’s taught for granted, but keep critical about whatever is taught is unnecessary and unrealistic, and reasons supporting my point are as below:
Wondering is the process of learning. During this process we absorbs the nurture of the stuff that taught and made it part of ourselves. For example, we were told by the textbook that men are evolved from animals, ape, to be exactly. But we don’t just accept this without asking for evidences. We need to find evidence to prove is true or deny it as false. “How can that be, we are so different from those ugly monkeys, we are much smarter”, this is skepticism. And thanks to our curious about “facts”, we go all the way to the charming knowledge of genes, types of gene, different arrangement of genes, the function of each gene. These gene theories prove that we are much more resembled with animals than we have ever imagined. And also if Newton took for granted that apples should fall to ground not flying to sky without skepticism, there should be no mechanic laws of Newton which are the basic ground for so many science discoveries in astronomy and physics. That would be an unimaginable lost to human race, we would be still in Dark Age. If we stop at the facts without skepticism, without set off searching for why, we end up with dead knowledge, a smattering of knowledge. If so, science would no longer be glories but turns to be boring.
But, though I am quite positive about keeping a inquisitive mind to knowledge taught because taking initiative in accepting is more effective than being cramped with boring stuff, and also being inquisitive, we could be rewarded with so much unexpected new knowledge; I must make my point clear that we should not be critic about whatever that is presented to us because it unnecessary and unrealistic. As a saying goes” we should have the courage to change what we can change, and the tolerance to accept what we can’t change, and also, the wisdom to distinguish between the can and cannot”. The same is to as to what we should query. For example history facts are something we should not query. Such as American gained its independence in July 1776, George Washington was the first American president; Obama is the first black president. China is America’s biggest debtor as a poor developing country; dollars are value about 7 times than RMB for almost 3 years without change of exchange rate though there is some possibility that it is going to appreciate under high international pressure; for example, John Maynard Keynes formed his theories of government took part in market economic and made great contribution during the great depression; Paul Krugman won noble prize of economic of 2008 and so on. These are the facts we should take without asking questions, for these are what happened in history, history once happened can not be changed.
And with limited time and energy, it is also impossible for us to question all, so we should safe for better use. Instead of query the fact that china is the biggest debtor to America, we should query about how can a poor developing country can be the biggest debtor to the most powerful country in the world; instead of querying about the fact that Krugman won the noble prize, we should be curious about what make him the winner, what his theories have explain, do them fit the running economy? Instead of being skepticism about Washington being the first president we should dig into what are the characters and the history background that made him the one in leading position. Will these characters fit your situation in dealing problems confusing you? Facts are to be leaned, and why facts are facts is to be queried. When we know the answers, we can take advantage of it in solving our problems. The most important thing is not what we know but how to use what’s known.
All in all, we should take initiative in learning but not just accept whatever is thrown to us; we should have the ability to distinguish what is to be queried and what is to be accepted as facts so as to save our time and energy; we should not stop at superficial knowledge but dive deep into to find why, that’s our process of learning, that’s the engine the driving human beings on in exploring the unknown.
