The author asserted that the arts reveal theotherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society. I generally agree with the assertionto some extent that arts do have such effects on our society, whereas, wecannot overlook the individual emotion and inspiration contained in the arts, whichshow not only the reality of the world but also the artists’ authentic life tous.
Admittedly, when people are suffering harshtimes, the true mind reflecting the present is abandoned to exhibit, artsalways show its great power in proclaiming the hidden ideas. Consider, forinstance, during the Second World War, under the dark reign of Nazi, thebombing that claimed many lives in Spain was going on, but no one dared tospeak out their hatred and sorrow towards the dead. But Picasso drew anabstract painting of the bombed city to express the public hidden ideas. Wereit not for his painting, nobody can know the masses’ feeling. In this way, thepainting transcended the art itself and became the prolocutor of the publicvoice.
Furthermore, prevailing ideas and attitudes ofthe society can easily be discovered from the arts. One sees according to the Medievaland Renaissance arts, the Christian theme can never be so obvious. Manypaintings were created aiming at expressing the public respect to the deity, many configurations of the church (often high and slim as the CologneCathedral) represents the awe and the power of the deity and the believers’respect to god. This phenomenon exists in the literature similarly, focusing ontelling us about experiences and thoughts of people in society while in turnsociety makes us more aware about its own impulses.
Nevertheless, personal moods coexist with thesociety reflection in arts. We cannot deny that every great works are born by themakers’ inspiration. Common sense and daily life teach us that it’s so hard toseek for an inspiration that we can only rely on the emotions from our life. Inthis way, painting and music, two particular art forms, tend to representpeople’s emotional responses to life, such as hope, happiness, serenity, etc., whichare clearly shown in the ancient poems of those poets like Li Bai, Du Fu andBai Juy. All of these poems were rooted in the incidents they came across. Thestrong colors in Van Gogh’s painting reveal his enthusiasm attitude toward lifelikewise. In all these cases, it seems that the art reflect the artist as wellas the society.
On the whole, art is a boat sailing on thetime sea bearing the passenger products of the era. Accompanying the hiddenideas and impulses of the society, major passenger of the art boat, individual andother affairs are also travelling.
