131 The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society.
Does the arts reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society? In response to this issue, we need to analyze the proposition comprehensively from the dialectic perspective, investigating the nature of the truth by critical analysis of concepts and hypotheses. The author declares that a society’s hidden ideas and impulses can be revealed by the arts, however, it oversimplifies this issue. The final judgment, in my point of view, should depend on a case-by-case analysis.
First and foremost, I agree with the author that the arts do disclose tremendous aspects, such as the hidden ideas and impulses, of a society. I would like to demonstrate my own explanation that supports this point of view. To begin with, inevitably, a society has an impact, more or less, on its arts. While the bridge which connects these two, in fact, is we human. One hand, as we are born into, and then live throughout all our life period in this very society, each stage of our life is under the effect of the society which we belong to. Thus our ideas and values are shaped by this society. Thereupon, the ideas and impulses of a society are infused into its individuals. On the other hand, arts, though its forms may vary, from paintings, music, to literature and so on, to some degree it acts as one means of expressing of the inner emotion, which is originated from the society, of its master, can reflect the society in many aspects, thus finally reveal the ideas and impulses of the society. Let’s bring our discussing here to a more present and practical context, it can be given a concrete example. Architecture of ancient china, including The summer palace, the forbidden city, etc., typically used red and yellow color as their main tone, and this reveals the ideas of generosity and the authority of royal power in that society.
Admittedly, as proposed above, the arts revealed the ideas and impulses of a society in various aspects; however, from a more objective perspective, merely looking at the arts does not suffice enough to reflect the whole spectrum of a society. Additionally, a society is complicated by its considerable aspects, such aspects as politics, economy, science, education, etc. whereupon, to be more persuasive, I would like to point out that, in order to get a more unbiased and full understanding, it would be wiser to look into a society from a more comprehensive view。To be specifically, despite the arts, one can also understand some important characteristics of a society by studying its major, or even some other average cities; similarly, contacting with people and studying their behaviors and attitudes also help to get to know their society; likewise, the condition of its economies, development of scientific research or the education system, are other perspectives reflecting the society.
From the analysis made above, I strongly commit to the notion that, though the arts serve as one significant role in revealing the hidden ideas and impulses of a society, to get a full understanding of a society, we need to view it from a more comprehensive perspective. Since the arts alone, does not suffice to provide the whole information about its society. In a word, this intricate issue depends on that whether we are informed of the complexity of the notion of a society.
