TOPIC: ISSUE136 - "The absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare."
WORDS: 630 TIME: 00:41:23 DATE: 2010-7-9 11:47:38
Is it very rare for human beings to have no choice? As I concede, though people seem have a lot of choices in the modern democratic countries, they could not always choose what they like in their life time.
To begin with, in democratic countries, although, civilians indeed have a myriad of choices in their daily life, since the regime and social ideology allow them to take a relatively free choice in terms of their habits or hobbies. To be specific, people have the right to choose a political party and a politician to follow, and vote for them in the elections; they could also choose their life long partner -their husbands or wives-, and choose their lifestyles. They could also choose their jobs: they could quit the current job easily and find another totally different job in a short time. Moreover, in the modern countries, they also have right to choose the religion that they believe in. For instance, when a boy born in the USA was fascinated in the culture of eastern countries, he would change his belief to Buddhism from his former Christian. The modern society holds a generous heart to all civilians living within it to have their own and specific choices.
However, the speaker overstates the situation for human beings to have a choice, and overlook so many special and different possibilities in the world. Not all countries are like the USA and other democratic countries that in some countries, people really have few opportunities to have their own choices. In some despotism, civilians could not choose the presidents and they could not even choose to hear all the real voices from all around the world. To be specific, in North Korea, due to the block of true information, civilians cannot choose to get the real results of the Football World Cup in 2010. In their mind, they still hold the idea that the North Korea national football team won the game with the world champion 'Brazil'. What's more, they could not even choose what they believe in. They are born to be imparted the idea that they should take the president as their idol and never change their belief in their life time. In short, people in despotisms and other relatively conservative countries have to always face the problem of the absence of choice.
Moreover, every human being living on this planet including the civilians living in the democratic countries cannot choose their life track. They have to experience the procedure of birth, getting old, illness, and finally being dead. This is the basic life track for all human beings no matter where they live or what their social status is. It remains a legend that human beings could live forever. People have to abide by the natural principles and have no choice to avoid that.
In addition, people could not choose their congenital characters and healthy status. It is helpless but true and could not be changed that people could not choose where they are born or who their parents are. People could not choose their characters such as their color of skin, their genders, their nationalists and endless other individually innate attributions. They have to obey the arrangement of their destinies rather than have chances to choose or change. For instance, those who are born with congenital diseases have to suffer from the diseases during their life time, and have few possibilities to recover from the unlucky destiny. In this sense, people are helpless and hopeless in choosing anything before they come to this planet.
In sum, it is true that people seem to have ample choices in their daily life; however, the circumstances of the absence of choices occur often, and people are unable to change the desperate and helpless situations. |
