Art consists of paintings, sculpture, and other pictures or objects which are created for people to look at and admire or think deeply about. Does it reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society? The speaker thinks so. However, in my opinion, arts reveal not only hidden ideas and impulses of a society, but also the mainstream of the society. What’s more, if one wants to entirely learn a society, it is not enough only to study the arts of the society.

To begin with, admittedly, arts can reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society. Arts is a mirror of our world and emotions, since they are extracted from the personal experience and feelings of artists. Balzac has said ‘novels are secret history of a nation’. The saying is used constantly to point out that literatures can reveal the daily life of common people which might be ignored by traditional history literatures. For example, if you have read the novel <;Pride and Prejudice>, you can know that, before the social status of women was improved, seeking a good wife had a more important meaning than it is today. Through this book, we can learn many ideas of common people in that age. In general, literatures record vivid particular instances which can help us
know the hidden ideas of a particular society.

I don’t deny that arts reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society, but they express more about the mainstream ones. We don’t need to see further than environment protection and sustainable development which have been the themes of the time. The popular 3D film <Avatar> expresses the mainstream belief--- people place too much emphasis on economic development while ignoring the importance of environmental protection which will inevitably lead to nature’s revenge. I think this view which is reflected by the film is not hidden, but is public and social mainstream.

However, in order to study a society entirely, it is not sufficient to only learn its arts. Because arts are summaries of people’s experience and emotions, which sometimes are subjective and even is one-sided. Take American present commercial films for example, these films are fulfilled with individualistic heroism such as the <Superman>,< Spider-Man>,< Batman> and so on. We can imagine that if one wants to learn American society by watching these films, what he or she concludes may be that the people of America is a group of people who focuse on how to save the world every day. If we want to understand American society and American people, what is needed is studying the common people of America who almost are not the leading roles of these films. What’s more, literatures often emphasize the expression of emotions while introducing a little of knowledge about the economy and law which are usually treated as background of a story. However, the knowledge of the economy and law of a society is necessary to study a society. Without awareness of the developed economy, advanced law systems and political systems of America, we cannot distinguish her from developing countries only by her literatures.

To sum up, we must realize that arts are important to reveal not only the hidden ideas and impulses of the society but also the mainstream ones. However, arts are not panacea. We cannot learn a society just by its arts.
