The Greeks also had their Vibram own version of the dumbing- down debate. Plato complained of popular spectacle where the whole audicncc voted for the most entertaining act. Vibram Five Fingers Sale He disapproved of the practicc on the grounds that it encouraged performers to 'pander to the mob with inappropriate or incorrect pleasures* {Ford 2002: 284). But it wasn't just the performers who abandoned their standards, so too did some judges. They made decisions according to the desire of the audience rather than their Coach Bags own expertise. Judges, wrote Plato, should be the 'teachers' of the audience, not their 'pupils' (Russell and Winterbottom 1972: S3). The reputedly fashion- conscious Aristotle also rejected the idea of mass appeal as a criterion for artis?tic excellence, but only in the case of poetry. Hven then he is prepared to admit that the general public may be a better judge than the individual, 'for some judge one part, others another, and collectively they judge the whole' (in Ford 2002: 288-9). However, he has a more tolerant Coach Outlet view of music than Plato, rec?ommending that different types be available to cater for different tastes: 'cathartic melodies give people a harmless enjoyment [and] the vulgar too should have relaxation' (Russell and Winterbottom 1972: 133).
We said above that before poetry there were songs. Indeed, Gregory Nagy
Coach Handbags suggests that the major metres of Greek poetry were all 'derived from the rhythm of songs' (1997: s).6 There were songs for different occasions: threnos for funerals; an ianibos for ritualised abuse; and dithyrambs Skechers Shape UPS for the worship of Dionysus. There were also songs thar dealt with the Skechers Greek mythology. Each parr of Greece had its own tradition of song, and it wasn't Vibram Five Fingers until the develop?ment of the city states that any attempt was made to standardise them. Songs were an integral part of public occasions like Coach games, festivals, victory cele?brations and religious cercmonics and of private ones like the symposium, or drinking party. They were usually performed in one of two ways. The first, a monody, was performed by a single professional such as a rhapsode and the second was performed by a chorus who also danced. The chorus had a leader whose 'ultimate model' was Apollo himself and Vibram the divisions in the chorus reflected divisions in society (Nagy 1997: 52 and 57). Songs were judged on their appropriateness for the occasion. It would not do to sing a song of lamentation to Apollo, for that was more proper for Hades. Since each god had their own song it would be a violation to perform for one what belonged to another. The Greek word prepei, 'it is fitting', governs the use of song and is one of the sources for the 'decorum' which will be a key concept in the Vibram Five Fingers dis?course of literary criticism.
